• 1962 TR 4 Oil pump drive shaft (source of engine noise?)

I have a rather loud clack or ticking noise at idle that I seem to remember reading somewhere might be coming from the oil pump drive shaft. Any conformation on that theory? If so, what is the fix other than replacing the shaft? Timing chain, tensioner and gears have been changed. Valves are adjusted properly and I'm confident ...

  • Original fan belt installation

I purchased the 900 MM heavy belt from Moss for my 62 TR4. Absolutely no way in hell I can install this belt. I consulted Moss tech rep and he suggested an alternate part that measeres 975M.M. This belt if far too large, there is not enough adjustment on the generator to take up the slack before it hits the inside wheel well. I thought ...

  • Re: TR3A Crankshaft Damper

I've been worrying about this harmonic balancing question ever since I'v gotten back on the road with my 62 TR4. I like to drive the car but see no need to wind it past 4 grand or so. Is it really the case that the crank extention serves as a harmonic balancer on the stock setup? I can find no referance to this in shop manuals. Also, I have ...

  • TR4 piston question

I purchased a 86 mm piston and liner set from Moss.P/N 814-310 The eng is back together and running great. Now I notice in the TR4 shop manual (pg.1-102 fig.36) that the original pistons had a slot in the skirt that must be orientated toward the offset on the piston rod bearing cap or, facing the cam shaft side of the ...

  • Petronix distrubitor

My Lucas is shot and I'm looking for a replacement distributor . I'm looking for feedback on the Petronix Flamethrower. Also I notice that they sell a positive and negitive ground unit.If I went with a positive ground and then desided to converted the car to a negitive ground do I then have a problem? Thanks: ...

  • Crankshaft oil deflector question

Looking at the oil deflector (item #79 on pg.8 of the fall/winter TR4 Moss catalog) it's not real clear to me what the proper orientation of the deflector should be. Should the cupped edge of the deflector be facing forward or aft? Also, while we're at it, what is the function of the oil deflector? Thanks: ...

  • TR4 Timing chain slack

The shop manual gives 10MM max slack for the timing chain. I've got about 7MM and since I'm in there I'm going to replace chain and spring tensioner in hopes of quieting down my engine. I've also noticed that the teeth on the cam gear are very sharp. Is this normal? Thanks: KSD

  • Re: Fan balance "Are they kidding or what?"

Thanks for the mower blade balancer tip. After further research and checking out my fan and weight assy. I noticed a very small hole drelled thru weights and fan hub. I believe this was done during the balance at the factory and will provide a good referance for reassembly. I am however going to try the mower balancer and see how things ...

  • Fan balance "Are they kidding or what?"

Having just removed the original fan (TR4) for a water pump and timing chain replacement, I'm wondering just how important and/or effective the original over enginerred balance weight setup is. I suspect the position of the weights as someone else has be there befor me but I marked them befor removing, I'm tempted to just omit them ...
