• Re: Color codes

Don't get too hung up on precise matches to the original stuff because it varied quite a bit even in the factory paint booths, according to several historical books on the ''T''-series cars. The original cellulose laquer was the cheapest stuff they could get away with, fading so badly so quickly that there's a number of historical accounts ...

  • Re: Color codes

Most factory shots of the TD show silver wheel paint. Try here for paint information and just about anything else you might want to know about the car - http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_finishes.htm.

  • Re: TC Radiator alignment

Well, I can't hand off any TC-specific tidbits, but after re-aassembling the '51 TD a few times, I did learn a few lesssons the hard way. The bonnet structure on the TD does have a bit of a slope, created by the use of the hood strip inner support (part #13, p32, Moss catalog) which lifts the bonnet hinge a tad. Big lesson I learned is to ...

  • Re: Rear Oil Seal Conversion

You'll be pulling the rear cap on and off, and same with the crankshaft, about a dozen times to get everything squared up. My joke about the bearing cap being cast by pre-Industrial Age Druit priests after an all-night ale binge pretty well sums up the primitive casting quality. The answer to your question depends on just how awful the ...

  • Re: Rear Oil Seal Conversion

Don: I installed the same kit on my '51 TD. Somewhere on the ''T''series forum, I've posted my blog of how things went. http://www.mossmotors.com/forum/forums/thread/2242.aspx The seal lip rides at the very forward edge of the crankshaft flange surface. Install the Speed-i-Sleeve so that it overhangs the crankshaft ...

  • Re: Clutch pedal stop:

I also installed the Moss 5-speed transmission for the exact same reasons. I really got tired of the ''Grunch!'' every time you selected first or reverse, no matter how careful you were! More ''character'' than I wanted. Throw in the Pertronix ignitor kit, and that package of new technology in the old relic really makes a ...

  • Re: Clutch pedal stop:

Nope - the only clutch pedal stop is the firewall panel itself. All you're doing as the pedal goes to the floor is lifting the pressure plate a bit further back from the flywheel. No harm done as the linkage geometry can only move so far. Some people argue we should enjoy these automotive relics as a period piece of engineering ...

  • Re: 1500 Midget Oil Change Issues

A ''Gold Seal'' engine is MG's terminology for a factory-built replacement engine.

  • Re: slow cranking speed of the Starter.

PhilG: Someone in the thread suggested that the ground strap should be replaced, which I intend to do, but I inspected it and found it to be in pretty good shape. Maybe not ''like new'' shape, but the braid and the ends were in tact with just a couple of individual strands freyed. Is that enough to kill a good ground? If not done ...

  • Re: Extreme smoking after head rebuild

''... but my primary suspicion is that there is too much oil spraying around the top of the head.'' The problem is not too much oil spraying around, but oil seeping into the combustion chambers. I'm not any sort of engine rebuilding expert, but I'd lay odds on valve stem seals - particularily the intake valves - as a likely ...
