The Moss Motors Forum is now read-only for informational purposes. The Moss Motors forum was
formed at a time when other forums were just getting started and other forums have proven that they
are a better model. We closed the forum because there is an abundance of information on more popular
forums and anything that was being posted, and answered, on our site was diluting the general knowledge
base. We suggest you check out BritishCarForum.com and MGExperience.net for a start.

  • Re: MG TD in Australia

Here's some info from the New England MG ''T'' Register in their bible for all things ''T''-series ''The T-Series MG Handbook'' pages 42-47. EXR - A right-hand drive car built for ''General Export'' to locations other than the US and Canada. EXL - A left-hand drive export car for destinations other than the US and Canada EXU - original ...

  • Re: Fuel tank sensor/sender unit repair - 53TD

Try the plumbing department at your local hardware store. There are brass compression fittings used to connect small copper tubing together. I have no idea if the metal fuel line in my TD was original, but a 5/16'' compression coupling set worked to connect two sections of line.

  • Re: Stiff throttle linkage

Good to hear! Just got done solving my own SU demon. Last week, the TD suddenly refused to idle correctly, with the engine speed dropping well below the normal setting and eventually stalling. Ran fine with throttle added. Turns out there's a twin-eared brass fitting that holds the idle speed adjustment screw, with the ...

  • Re: Stiff throttle linkage

Hi Steve - Welcome to the fun world of these classic little cars. Instant car show wherever you go ... No, there should be no throttle issues like you describe. The throttle linkage should have easy and free movement thruout its range, limited only by resistance from the return spring on the carb linkage. I seriously suspect ...

  • Re: oil filter draining down?

We'll need some more info before the forum engine guys can hazard an educated guess on solutions ... Oil viscosity? Just about everyone recommends 20W50 mineral oil (not synth) with the ZDDP additive. Engine temp at that 2500 rpm - 30 psi reading. Idle pressure with the engine just after a ''cold'' start and when at normal operating ...

  • Re: Electronic Ignition?

I have the Pertronix ignitor kit in my TD. Worth every penny in improved engine performance and no problems since installation 7 years ago. There were some overheating issues with the very first units, but that was fixed long ago. Caution, don't leave the ignition system ''ON'' (primary ignition circuit powered) for an extended ...

  • Re: oil filter draining down?

Yep - that's what my '51 TD engine does, albeit with an aftermarket modern filter conversion kit installed. I believe the 5-10 second delay on oil pressure buildup during cranking is due to the oil pressure tap point between the filter and the cylinder head inlet. The oil pump has to push oil thru the filter (which is full) then up the ...

  • Re: Rebuilt engine smoking

Dang - wish I had that kind of compression in my tired '51 TD! Just a thought - check that the oil drain holes in the head are completely open thru the cylinder head gasket and block back to the sump. I haven't pulled the head off mine, so I don't know if the gasket is ''sided'' or not. Let us know what it was when you find the ...

  • Re: Vapor lock on TD

I added the TF carb spacers between the carbs and intake manifold, plus fabricated sheet metal heat shields from a design published by Bill Bollendonk from the Rocky Mtn MGT Club. It helped a bunch, but did not totally cure the hot day vapor lock issue. The only 100% effective method that worked on my '51 TD was to prop open the ...
