Product Suggestions and Updates
Part of my job description is to determine what products we need to hunt down or manufacture ourselves. I'm asking you, the formum member for input on parts that we currently do not offer, or that are below acceptable quality. We don't get to spend as much time as we would like bolting cars together, so we need feedback from the trenches. If you ran into a problem finding a part for your restoration, let us know. Accurate, critical observations about quality issues with current part numbers are really appreciated too. Please include the part number so we can quickly figure out exactly what you are referring to. Blanket comments such as "your chrome plating is pathetic (or worse)" are a waste of your time and mine. Every part we carry can vary over time depending on the manufacturer, subvendor, aspects of the moon, etc. A specific complaint about fit or finish of a part number will get our attention and let us know what to look out for. I will not be able to give immediate answers to questions, but any input will increase our knowledge and give us a better idea on where to prioritize our efforts. We are committed to keeping British cars safely on the road and will need your help to do it. thanks

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
296-030 havent ordered any in a while but you have them way too thick at about .025" this gasket needs to be .010" as it sets the hub bearing end play. See the factory shop manual. 294-210 as an example....how bout a 294-210-5 0r 294-210-10 for a five or 10 pack at a reduced price. ?? lots of low priced consumables might be , in addition to eachies, put in "multi packs" . Another is 324-800...you get the idea.......... 435-640 seems to be too big in the o.d. and wont fit in the locating register in the block. Some have been machined on the top side in 3 places but some arent to clear the dust cover. Seems to vary when you change vendors?

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Mowogian: Thanks for the input: 296-030 according to the factory manual (Issue 4, Section H4) should be .010, currently the one I measured is .019. I'll check to see if there is any reason why thickness should be increased (sometimes the factory manual information has been improved upon over time). If not, we will be looking for alternate sourcing. Multi packs are a great idea, but currently would tie up warehouse resources too much. We will keep on hammering at the concept though. 435-640 Any chances of pictures and measurements? We do not have factory specifications for this part.

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Kelvin: Since you're selling lots of the Sierra 5-speed transmission conversions, recommend you add a replacement carpet piece for the transmission cover that does not have the old dipstick cutout. Make it a stand-alone item in the carpet section of the catalog. In addition, add a with/without dipstick option when ordering a full carpet set. That 5-speed turned my '51 TD into a whole different, and much more drivable car!

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Dick: Thanks for the suggestion. We made up one tunnel this way in the upholstery shop and it is pretty simple, so I'll see about adding a part number for it. Doug: I guess you didn't get the PM, or havn't had a chance to reply. I've got 5 speed kits for the 1275 and 1500 on the way.

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Couple of things. The first one is old and I think you've fixed it but it just now burned me so please allow a rant. I'll feel better
More than 5 years ago I bought a set of (Healey) 100M conversion carbs on. I just recently got them out for an M engine I am building up. The part number then was 370-798 (I just verified that in an old catalog). The description said they were correct except for the choke levers. Wrong! The float chamber on the rear carb is an SU P/N 3495, should be 3496. Moss list price for that part and the corresponding lid is $208.90. Needless to say, I'm now looking for used parts. Moss now lists the conversion carb set as 370-738 so I assume they have fixed the problem. 370-798 was/is listed for the MGA Twincam which is probably the right application. Now a more current gripe. I bought a 635-840 Spin-On Filter adapter kit for a BN1 I am working on. The installation Instructions that came with it said some BN1s (I think that should be most BN1s) use 3/8 BSF bolts. UNC and SAE bolts were provided but BSF must be purchased separately at a cost of $13.90. That's almost half what the adapter cost. What bugs me about this is that the instruction sheet was written in '05 so there has been plenty time to add a note to the listing in the catalog so one would know what he is getting (or not getting) and could order the bolts with the kit. I've got some positive comments to make but I'll save those for later Marv James

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Marv: It sounds like we got the carbs covered. In this business there are a lot of fiddly things that can make the product not quite right, but without feedback we don't get a chance to find the mistakes and fix them. The spin on kit had item notes on the computer to prompt the salesperson, but if you ordered over the web, or the salesperson wasn't awake you would not have gotten the message. I've notified the catalog dept. to update the catalog and web listing to include the bolt listing which applies to early BN1 engines to 213324. We got part of this one right by adding the instructions, but needed better follow through. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Since you asked ... I purchased the following parts - 160-790 WIPER ARM, R/H (nut on front) 160-690 WIPER ARM, L/H (nut on front)
These are wiper arms for MGTC's. Inside the base of the arm is a brass squeeze fitting. This fitting is conical in shape and when the nut is tightened the fitting is supposed to squeeze the shaft and secure the arm so the wiper will move when the motor is turned on. In your reproduction arms the brass fitting is only half the length of the original fitting. As a result it is impossible to tighten the nut enough to produce sufficient friction to cause the fitting to grip the shaft. Moreover, because the fitting is too short, you run out of threads on the nut before you can possibly press on the fitting enough to generate the proper pressure.
In my case the fix was to remove the brass fittings from the old arms and put them in the new arms. But this partially defeats the reason I bought the new arms in the first place, as I wanted to eliminate years of slippage wear from the system. If it helps I could take a side by side picture of the fitting so you can see the difference. It is significant.
I also purchased the following part - 434-130 WATER OUTLET (complete)
This was also supposed to be for the MGTC. I discovered that the angle at which the outlet exits the head points too far toward the front of the car to properly align with the radiator opening. I already sent pictures to you on this one but I thought I would mention it here to see what you might have done about it. It is clear to me that this part would work on a TD as the radiator opening seems to be about an inch farther toward the front of the car than it is on the TC. While the TC part and the TD part may look similar, on close side by side comparison the TC part points more vertically than the one for the TD. You need to redesign the part to fix the issue.
It would also be nice if you could offer the proper bumpers and overriders for those of us restoring MGTC EXU models. The TD bumpers are not correct at all, and the overriders you sell will not fit the proper EXU bumpers. It would also be nice to see some LUVOX shocks for the older "T" series cars available as well.
Thanks for asking and listening.
Regards

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Hi, Kelvin- My wife and I were camped next to you at Buttonwillow, and spoke with you then regarding 75 Midget trans gears (got through that issue). You were marketing A/C and superchargers. I've been looking for a part for some time now. It is a '79 MGB intake/exhaust combonation manifold that cracked. Local shops don't carry them, and I'm having no luck at junkyards. One MG shop I spoke to said to order them from Moss, but I corrected him that Moss doesn't carry them in catalog, so I'm writing to you. Is there enough demand to carry this product in your inventory once again? I could scrounge one from Ebay, but have to wait until an auctioneer posts one for sale. Other states besides California probably convert over to Weber and headers, but we Californians are stuck with the smog abatement laws after (correct me if I'm wrong here) 1975 models, so I need to keep the emission controls original. I need an OEM or used part. Your thoughts... Mike Mann Highland, Ca

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
There's been a number of threads and discussions in other periodicals about the removal of zinc from standard motor oil and how that adversely affects the wear on older engines with flat tappet valve trains. Perhaps a topic for a future newsletter would be a review of modern motor oil properties, the impact on our ancient Brit motors, and any products being marketed to minimize the impact. I suppose the two questions should be "Does the new oil adversely affect longevity of my '51 XPAG?", and "What can I do about it?" Might be a good issue to include in the marque-specific catalogs, too.

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Dick: That's a really good suggestion. The biggest problem is finding accurate information as it applies to British engines. There are a lot of metalurgical differences between British and American engines that so far has not been addressed. We are continuing to research subjects such as how much ZDDP is recomended for chilled iron components and what hardness should we be looking for in sliding contact components. It's a lot more complex than is immediately evident. Personally I'm very much afraid of the knee jerk reaction that if some is good, more is better when looking at additive packages. Stay tuned for further discussion and products that should help the life of our engines.

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Brit tail lights are woefully dim under the best of circumstances, and "T"-series MG tail lights are the original stealth versions, not visible to mere mortals. I've used halogen lamps, which are brighter, but use lots of Lucas juice and are quite pricy. Has anyone come out with an LED version of the venerable 1156 bulb? Those LED lights for the new cars are BRIGHT!

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Hello Kevin; I have received Moss email flyers for some time and just tried to enter the "Supercharger Contest". Before I did so, I did check the pdf file of the contest rules. The eligibility clause states " Contest open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, 18 years of age or older as of 1/1/08. ...... " Living in Canada, this contest is obviously a pass. But I did click on the "Enter Form" and found that Canada is listed. I suggest the "Enter Form" be amended to comply with whatever the legal position is - and I assume the contest rules are correct. --Scott Morris; Simcoe, Ontario, Canada; '60 Austin Healey MkI BN7-project & '62 Austin Healey MkII BT7-driver

Re: Product Suggestions and Updates
Aloha Scott, Unfortunately, as per our Eligibility section of our Fine Print PDF, our customers from Canada are not open to enter. The entry form has virtually the same coding as our catalogue request form and therefore it has Canada (as well as other non-U.S.A. locations) as a possible entry. Since the form is used for all of our contests - some of which may include non-U.S. applicants - it has been decided that the form will not be changed. Thank you for this question and allowing us to make it clear for you. Good luck and happy motoring! John ZK *****
