67 B hissing sound at transmission shifter

Happens in all gears, most noticeable in 4th... it really sounds like a hiss... hard to describe. The sound seems to be coming from the transmission and is being transmitted somehow to (or through) the shifter. If pressure is put on the shifter, the sound changes in intensity, but will not go away. It's been doing it for a long time (years) so I'm not overly concerned, but just wondered if anyone else has experienced this, or has any idea what causes it...

     Thanks!!!

Pretty sure it is all normal. I notice it most with the top up. I put a glove over it to muffle it a bit when It starts to get annoying.

Assuming you have checked the oil level, have you looked at the little nylon "thingy" on the end of the shifter lately?  Is it still there?

(although that usually produces a rattle or buzz if worn or missing)

that hissing sound is the lay-shaft bearings (cluster gear) and some is normal for worn Bs ..drain and refill your transmission with 20-50 as soon as possible  as see if it makes a difference as most used mgs have wrong lubes in eng and drive line..

Thanks, Y'all! I'm gonna pull the stick and eyeball the little nylon bush. I've run nothing but Castrol 20-50 in there since the rebuild way back in 1980, and it has made this sound about as long as I can remember (which ain't all that long...) I know it's been more noticeable the last few years...

I'm going to drain it and put Redline synthetic in there... their MTL and MT90 oils were highly recommended by several folks at the last show I was at... The MT90 is supposed to be equivalent viscosity to a 20-50 engine oil and is designed for manual transmissions. We'll see if it makes any diff.
