Subject: Ask a technical or parts related question (Req. #231790)
Make: A.H.

Comments: I have gas leaking out of the top of the 1st reservoir. It is leaking out of a small hole just under the area where the gas feed comes into the top. There is a small piece of aluminum (a baffle ?) covering the hole.
Can you let me know what might be the problem and what parts (& part numbers) i need to order?
Thanks,
Don

Hi, Don,
The problem with your carburetor is that it is flooding. The hole in the lid is there to allow excess fuel to escape (and to allow air to vent when the bowl fills). Two possible causes for the fuel to be leaking are:
1. The needle-and-seat (float valve) is not seating properly. Either it is worn or there is a piece of dirt trapped on the seat. The cure is to clean out the seat and check it again. If it still leaks, replace the needle-and-seat with a new one (Moss p/n 373-625). It might be a good idea to replace both as if one is worn the other is likely to be also. You will probably need also to replace the float bowl lid gaskets, p/n 378-360.
2. The other possibility is that the float itself has developed a pinhole and now has fuel in it. This prevents it from floating properly and therefore it cannot close the float valve all the way. Using a pair of needle-nose pliers, remove the pin that the float pivots on, lift out the float and shake it. If there is fuel in it, replace it with p/n 378-470. Make sure the float height is correct, too. When the float is mounted to the lid, turn the lid upside down so it is resting on the float valve. There should be a space of no more than 3/16" nor less than 1/8" between the float and the lid; this is measured by placing a drill bit across the lid, under the float.
