Yes, it does have the heat shield (but is the OEM one enough)?

Granted, I am a novice, but have been mucking about the internet researching similar symptoms and it all seems to be explained by the heat generated from the block evaporating the fuel in the bowls.  Somehow I can't accept this, as I can stick my hand between the block and the heat shield without getting burned, and yet the car will not start again until it is cooled down, or wose yet, push started (if we are at an intersection blocking traffic).

Carb tuning?  Distributor? Anything?  I am up to documenting and taking pictures of any procedure you suggest and posting the successful one on a website for future refence to help out future MGB'ers with the same problem.

Or maybe you it's just as "simple" as going and getting my carbs professionally tuned, I dunno.

Have you played with the mixture?  It sounds to me like it's leaning out.  That could also come because your carbs are too worn and they're leaking more as they heat up and expand.  If you were really getting vapor lock, giving it gas wouldn't change anything.  It would still die.

Once it's warmed up, try spraying a little carb cleaner around the ends of the carb shafts.  If the engine slows, they're leaking around the shafts, and the carbs need to be rebushed.

There isn't really enough info in your post about the specifics of your situation to make an accurate diagnosis. However, it sounds as though you have an ignition problem. Burned points or points which have way too small a gap will cause your problem. Look into this first. If no results' continue this thread and tell me about the sounds, smells, and conditions that surround your "traffic stopping" incidents. I'm sure we can get you going on a more continual basis!
