76 MGB Major overhaul mult topics

I got this car and it was torn apart and painted (not the best paint job but I have seen worse). I have never owned an mg, but have always wanted one. My first task is to reinstall the engine. The transmission is in the car now. Q1: should I pull the transmission? Is it hard to align the clutch plate with out steping on the clutch with the engine out of the car? Q2: Can someone send me multiple pics of under the hood? I have one but it isn't all that clear. Like I said I didn't take this thing apart and really don't know where to put stuff back. Also pictures of the engine would be helpful. Especially of the Distributor and how it is aligned compaired to the engine. A picture that includes engine refrence points would be nice. I think I have it close but not totally sure. I have the #1 cly in tdc and that is great but where does the diafam point to up, down, rear??? Q3: Also the side crome trim is removed. looking at the moss catalog I see bolts and nuts. How does one acess the back of the fenders without pulling them?? Arn't they pop rivited? Then do they slide on?

    slom,

A1: Pull the transmission out, check the mounts, (you'll very likely decide to replace them) do the reatatchment on the garage floor. Make sure the clutch is centered and you'll have no problem. I've done them by eye at times, but an alignment tool is cheap. A2: Make sure you have the correct factory reprint manual for this car. Robert Bentley publishes them. A Haynes manual may be helpful as well since these include photographs. Catalogs often show very helpful views also, but there's nothing like looking at the real thing. Find a club in your area if you can. Without doubt, the members will go out of their way to help you. A3: the little nut plates are only used at the ends of the trim pieces where thay can be accessed. the rest of the fasteners are snaps which rivet on. Enjoy.

Q3.  There is only three nuts per side one on the front fender one on the door and one on the rear quarter accesed from the boot.

The rest are rivited on.The chrome strips do not slide on or you risk scratching your paint. Line them up and snap them in place one clip at a time.
