    catalytic converter removal

I want to remove the catalytic converter from my 1978 MGB any penalties to performance for doing this or any other reason (other  than pollution aspect) not to do this that any body knows. Thanks.I'de like to eliminate some of the heat generated under the carb.

    Re: catalytic converter removal

Mine is a 79 MGB Limited that came in through Canada. That is one of the differences in the cars. Mine has no converter as the US models do so it should have no impact on the car. Just another headache gone!

    Re: catalytic converter removal

I am considering eliminating the CC on my car. Good information is that I reside in a condition that has no pollutants assessments so I don't have to complete yearly exhaust testing. I am considering what are the specialized problems of doing this? I want to just tube it immediately through and of course carry on to the CC in situation I need to change it at some point. If I pull it out of there will the ECU begin to complain? Has anyone drawn theirs out? What is the improve in mileage? Any ideas reviews or recommendations are valued. i am trying to replace it with high flow cat is this good?

    Re: catalytic converter removal

I am a little confused about the CC on my MGB. I have seen conventional CC's and they have a platenum grid inside where the exaust gasses must pass through.

The one on my MGB does not have this grid. I have to wonder if my grid is gone somehow or the MG CC does not have this grid. I must pass emitions inspection each year and my car passes with no problems with room to spare using this CC.

I agree that the CC is much too close to to the carburator and the heat shield is not that effective and  since the bottom plug in the float chamber is closest to the CC and is Made of plastic and held in place by an "O" ring, I have thought of moving the CC down the exaust pipe to be more under the car to reduce the chance of fire when this plug detererates from the heat. I have heard of a few MGB's that have caught fire, under the hood, Maybe because fo this flaw.
