TR7 Timing

I'm putting my 79 engine back together and as many times as I have read the haynes manual I bought I still can't figured out how to make sure the timing is correct. I know its a nub move to ask when I have plenty of resources available, but I'm just frazzled by it all. I don't want to fire it up and its not right, then have to take it all back apart to fix it. So what I'm asking is what position should things be in to start it up properly. Many thanks for the help.
Its a love affair.

Zeisan,
Are we talking about ignition timing or camshaft/valve timing?
