    Re: Tap on tac

It's asleep. Is this the worst problem you have wwith your 77? The tachometer in your car is a galvonemetric device. Galvonometric devices don't usually have a whole lot of torque! Tapping it helps break it loose and overcome the starting friction. Like I said, it's asleep...

    Coffee sounds good!

As Bill noted the 77-80 tach doesn't have a lot of torque, so it doesn't take much gumminess in the works to prevent the needle from breaking free from the 0 rpm peg. I've got a really good treatise on cleaning these units somewhere, so look for a tach tech article on the forum sometime soon.

    Re: Tap on tac

Most British cars I've owned (and that's a lot!) -I've had to tap on the tach.  That's just part of the character that makes them lovable.

I bet new Chinese MG's won't be like that -what a drag.................

Nah.  They'll be made out of Chinese aftermarket parts.  Nothing will fit, everything will leak, and odd bits will fall off when you drive.  And spares will be overpriced.

Moss guys - this ain't aimed at you.  You're more the victim of this problem than most of us, 'cause we still have other alternatives when your suppliers fail you.  You get stuck with a bunch of unusable windshields and such.  Don't ask how I learned that....  Sigh.
