    Tr3 Girling Axle bearings

    Hello,

I am chasing the parts to rebuild the rear axle of my car. One of the pinion bearings (rear) is a Timken cup 3120 matching a Timken cone 3188S. MOSS does not have it in stock presently so I try to source it in my area. Here, I find 2 options, cone 3188 and cone 3188S, but the 3188S is 5 times the price of the 3188 (220 euros vc 40 euros). Do I have to go for the 3188S?  what is the difference between them? MOSS p/n 100897A price is close to the price of the 3188, so I wonder, if I wait they have it in stock, if I will get a 3188 or a 3188S. There must be a difference between the two, but I was unable to find it on the web, even at the Timken site. Anybody knows? Thanks.

    Ask Timken.

    Re: Tr3 Girling Axle bearings

Most bearing manufacturers make replacement bearings for all applications so some company like SKF or KOYO might well have a bearing that meets the same specifications as the Timken items. Most have a conversion chart which will convert a Timken number to the corresponding SKF or other number. Here's the link to the SKF on line conversion table. http://www.vsm.skf.com/en-US/Catalog.aspx   I looked up the Timken 3120 and found a SKF number of BR3120 You can double check the specifications and dimensions, but it should be a direct replacement along with the matching SKF cone and you might be able to find that brand.

    Re: Tr3 Girling Axle bearings

Thanks Alfonso and Bill. I found the details. Both bearings are almost identical BUT 3188S has a larger filet radius and for this application, I need that one because with the smaller filet radius, the cone would not slide all the way through the pinion shaft to rest on the pinion back face. Difference in price is because Timken wants to phase out this bearing and force users to select another model, but in my case, I need the 3188 S. I see SKF makes the same bearing with the same reference and will try to locate that, or I will wait until Moss get it in stock

    Re: Tr3 Girling Axle bearings

It seems that Timken is trying to reduce their inventory of specality bearings such as the "S" version. I ran into a similar problem trying to source new tapered roller bearings for the front hubs of my Midget. The larger filet radius bearing had been discontinued. Timken still seems to think that their current bearing will fit, but it doesn't. Hope the SKF bearing will have the correct radius you need.

    Re: Tr3 Girling Axle bearings

There is a shortage on these bearings.

100897 bearing was also used on Land Rover - Do you know any Land Rover Parts stockists? Could be one on a shelf somewhere.....
