    rear wheel bearings

I am going to replace my rear wheel bearings this weekend.

This is a first for me. Do I need a "wheel puller" to get to the drum off?

    Thanks

    mark,

No wheel puller is needed to remove the drums. They'll come right off. However, before starting this project, study the manual carefully. The rear bearing needles ride directly on the axle shaft out near the hub. Often, the axle itself is galled in this location, and must be replaced. (not cheap!)

Beyond that, the hub upon which you mount the drum and wheel, must be pulled off a rather difficult keyed taper on the axle. Here is the real challenge. Sometimes this hub is so incredibly tight that it will begin to warp "potato chip" style from the puller on the studs, before it will give up and come off. If this happens, the hub is useless. Often, heat will help, but get ready for a battle. Of course, if you heat things up, you'll need new seals as well.

If you are near a GOOD automotive machinist, he may be able to remove them for you in a large shop press by carefully supporting the hub in such a way as not to damage it. Good luck, and let us know how it's going.
