    Frequency - Torque Cylinder Head

    Guys,

Gotta a silly question, how often should one torque their cylinder heads on the MG Engines?  Once a year?  Turn it left and then turn it right and tighten to the proper lbs...

From what I've read, for a B series engine, one should only need to tourque once at installation, then again after a short run-in period, often 500 miles is mentioned. However, opinions on this vary. The payen gaskets do seem to compress a little after first installation. When I rebuilt my MGB's engine, I checked the head and found that re-tourquing did snug the nuts down a little further after some hours were put on the engine. I won't touch it again though.

    Wiseguy Reply-

Re-torque every time you remove the cylinder head.

Torque to specification, with a fresh gasket, at installation. Run the engine up to full operating temperature. Let the engine cool to dead cold (overnight if possible, I mean DEAD cold). Torque the nuts down again. You are finished. This has worked fine for forty years. I ain't changin' now. Oh, don't forget to readjust your valves any time you mess with the head bolts
