    MGB Gearshift Rattle - Thanks!

My 76 MGB developed a buzz sort of rattle in the gearshift about a month or so ago.  The noise corresponded with the gear speeds and would go away when I held the gearshift.  I am writing this note to thank a few guys for helping me fix the problem.  Phil Wilkins had posted a note about gearshift rattle back in July but I could not find how he fixed it.  He mentioned John Causer as a source for the fix and after I contacted John he said to change the plastic/nylon bush on the bottom of the shift lever and to also apply grease.  I ordered the Moss part (bush, shift lever) and also the spring for the shift dampening lever and did the work today.  I had a few questions about what might "pop out" or go whacko when I removed the shift lever cover so I called Tony Barnhill and he relieved my fears.  All went well, I just drove it and the rattle is gone!  Thanks again Phil, John and Tony!

Hi.I'm pleased that you have managed to cure the rattle.Like me,you must have thought at some stage that a new / reconditioned gearbox was required. This rattle must be one of the most common  - annoying things to happen to an mg,when a few miles appear on the clock.

Hopefully this information will help  a lot of people with  an mgb  as there is no other information on this in any manuals.

What a great site this is.

    Phil
