inherited MGTD 1950 - aluminum ring on rear of motor (oil seal adapter? harmonic balancer?) do you know

Okay, so i inherited this wonderful 1950 MGTD and back in the day I had another and rebuilt it. I intend to rebuild this one also. But there is something on the back of the motor (mostly assembled motor) to which the flywheel would be attached.  It is an aluminum ring or housing or something aluminum. It is held together by two hex bolts.  I don't know what it is and whether to leave it on as the prior engine shop in florida apparently placed it there or what.

I think it is an old Moss Part.  My friend who died, Ernie Betts from the Tampa area, is the one who bought the part but I think the machine shop installed it.

    any help would be appreciated.

    Mike.

That is probably the Al Moss rear crank seal conversion assembly. There are instructions for the part listed on the Moss website

New seals are available for the conversion under part number: 433-422

    all the best

If you you look at the "external" engine of the moss parts catalog it most likely is item #26 "oil thrower". It is bolted onto the block with two bolts. It is part of the original "scroll type" rear crank oil seal.Wink

I think the poster meant to say "socket head" bolts, not "hex bolts". The Moss seal kit parts are indeed held together by two socket head screws.
