    TF engine overhaul

    Newbie here.

My XPEG TF engine needs overhaul - at least I think it does. I know #1 cyl. is down and I've got lots of oil leaks that shouldn't be. The eng. is the only thing that wasn't touched when I started a ground up restoration as compression was good and it was running fine when I started the restoration. What a mistake - but I had a budget I had to adhere to at the time. Now 4 years later I need to pull the eng. and figure it all out.

Need to talk with Motorbill66 if possible. Anyone know how to get up with him?  Phone, E mail or whatever.

    Thanks.

If you don't hear from him, here is a link to his web site.  Good Luck getting the TF running again.

    Re: TF engine overhaul

I think they're off on vacation (10/2).  I can vouch for the quality of the work his shop turns out - you won't find anyone better or more knowledgable about the "T" series motors, whether a stock restoration, modern oil seals added, or "stage-tuned".  Yes  Yes

The bad news is rebuilding the XPAG/XPEG motor is expensive if you want it done right.  The good news is that it's an order of magnitude cheaper than overhauling a Jag motor!

    Re: TF engine overhaul

    Hi Dick,

Thanks for the info.  Hey - just noticed you live in Oregon. Been here 2 years myself on July 4 th. Living 5 SW of Medford and just love it out here.

Brought the TF(red also) & a 72 Arched wheel Midget(my daily driver) with me on a standard 53 foot tractor trailer rig also packed full of my shop stuff all the way from Delaware. 3220 miles.  Any how maybe we can hook up sometime and swap MG stories. Still learning the ropes here and trying to find the nearest Brit car club.

Yes I am gathering the OH will not be cheap - that's why I'l seeking pro advice about the eng. problem. Not exactally the best time economically to be doing a major - especially if it's not really necessary. 3 cylinders are falling in the 150/160 range but #1 is only 60 psi. Squirt oil in thru the plug hole and it'll pump up to 140/150 but won't hold. Suspect frozen or broken ring/rings or burnt valve maybe. Pulling the head in car to see if I have any cyl.wall damage.  If so, some major work ahead, out comes the eng.& the wallet automatically flops open.  If that's the case I'm going to bite the bullet and do it right. Although the TF is not concourse it is a very nice car worthy of showing and a fresh eng. should boost it's value closer to the higher end of the current going price.

Thanks again for the info - I'll try motorbill66 Monday & see if he's around.

    Re: TF engine overhaul

Looks like we moved to Oregon on nearly the same day!  We just spent a few days touring the Jacksonville area and sampling the vino - beautiful area.  Driving the Umpqua River Road west of Roseburg and sampling the vineyard wares there is a wonderful excuse to get the old Brit car out for a drive.  Amazing how much easier it is to shift gears after a few tasting stops ...

There is a auto repair shop that caters to the older Brit vehicles in downtown Eugene.  I haven't used it, but others speak well of it.  Always seems to be a collection of MGs, Jags, and TR7s on the lot - "Sports Car Shop" 288 W 6th, Eugene.

The only "T"-series car club in Oregon is based in Portland http://home.earthlink.net/~clubtmg/.  There is another generic MG club based in the Salem area http://www.willamettemgclub.org/.  I am not aware of anything in your area.

We do have a brand new classic British car club here in Florence, started by me - the Central Oregon Coast British Car Club.  In 6 weeks of existence, we've gone from 4 members to 32 individuals, many with multiple Brit cars - Jags, Triumphs, 3 TDs, a classic Mini, Midgets, Morgans, Lotus, and lots of MGBs.  I had no idea there were so many old Brit sports cars stashed in the garages of this little town!  Our club motto of "We don't do tours unless food, wine, and/or ice cream is involved" appears to be a winner Beer

Here's hoping a bit of valve work will solve the TF's compression woes.  I highly recommend replacing the old points with one of those electronic ignitor kits like the Pertronix for the TF - you won't believe how much better that old lump will start, idle, and cruise at speed.  Worth every penny!

    Dick,

Sounds like you might have wakened a sleeping giant. Hope your memership continues to grow.  When I first got here I read in the Medford paper about a ralley here in the Medford area sponsored by the Southern Oregon British Car Club but no one seems to know anything about it. I like the motto.

To bad this conversation didn't take place before you were in the area as we're only a few miles from j-ville and we could have met. Shoot me a e next time you down this way and we'll sample some more wine. dwebb1945@aol.com. We're retired so our schedule is pretty flexible. Good chance I may join your club if you're accepting out of area members. Let me know thr details.

    Re: TF engine overhaul

    DEW & Dick,

There are couple of general British car clubs closer to DEW than either the Portland or Salem groups.  Clearly, the closest is the British Car Club of Southern Oregon, based in the Medford area.  The president of the BCCSO is Don Evans who lives in Medford.  I don't want to put his email or phone number out in public, but will try to send it directly to DEW, assuming the address is working and the filter doesn't trash my email.  In Klamath Falls is the Klamath British Touring Society, KBriTS.   I am the newsletter editor for KBriTS and can be reached via this forum.

    Re: TF engine overhaul

    Bill,

Could you e mail the info on how to get in touch with Don Evans of BCCSO again.  In the excitement of getting your e, which did show up in the spam folder I accidentally erased it before I read it and can't retrieve it.

Been looking for closer clubs than Dicks although I do hope to get over there & meet those members in the future. No one in Medford seems to know anything about BCCSO so I gave up on that club. Would like some info on KBriTS also.

     Thanks for your input.

    Sincerely,

    Dean Webb
