    Considering a 77 MGB purchase

Looking at a possible purchase of a 77 MGB. Seller says he is firm @ $5k for the car. It has recently had considerable mechanical work done including complete front end, bushings, kingpins, coil springs, rotors, calibers and alignment. Rear drums and brakes have been replaced along with the tires. Under the hood all hoses have been replaced, rebuilt Zenith carb, new electronic distributor, coil and wires. Interior looks good with new seats and head rests. New battery and box. New windshield and tail lights too. The car was repainted at some time and you can see some slight rusting on some of the seams and patch repairs are bubling in a few spots. There is one hole on the drivers side lower fender but a new replacement panel is included. Owner also has a overdrive transmission that he will include for a extra $500.00. Just wondering from what I described if this would be considered ball park pricing for this year car? The odometer reads 17K but owner is not sure of the actual milage. The number on the engine does not match the number on the dash. Not sure if it supposed to. Engine replaced? Car also was under coated at some time too.

5K is a good price for that car. Check all over and under for RUST. Make sure there's no frame damage due to that dreaded "R" word!

As far as that tranny, I believe that it should be an electronic overdrive for that car, with the switch on the top of the shift lever. My question is...what's in there now and why? I thought that electronic OD was standard in 77, but I could be wrong here.

All in all though, 5K sounds like a good price for a quick sale....I wonder why?Hmm

Thanks for your reply. I guess I was looking for someone to verify what I pretty much already knew. Just don't want to pay too much.  I'm kinda new to MG's. Owner is selling becuse of a new car purchase. Frame looks good but there is rust in a few spots. Lots of new parts. I'm still shoping around.

As the previous owner of a 1977 MGB roadster, I would have to say that if there is "bubbling" in the paint and you don't want to spend money on body repairs, WALK AWAY! At $5k, I would expect it to not have any rust. There are several nice examples here in Tulsa, OK that have zero rust and are in the under $4k range. Surely there are some in your area that don't have any rust and are in that price range.
