    now an oil leak

Just got done with the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder replacement.  I put some newspaper under the car (kind of like a puppy) to make sure nothing was leaking.  Well, the clutch and slave aren't leaking but there sure is engine oil leaking from somewhere.  The spot-glob-puddle is below the oil filter.  That was changed about 3 months ago and I didn't notice any leaks since then.  Pulled it out into the driveway and sure enough, it is definitely engine oil.  The filter appears dry.  Any ideas?

Wash, clean, dry engine so any leaks are easier to spot. If the oil is new it will make it a bit harder to trace.

The photo of your MG is of a rubber-bumper model and I am only familiar with my 1971 version with the inverted oil filter.  I might suggest that you check for a leak at the gasket between the filter adapter and the engine block.  If someone has used excessive force in putting the filter on, the adapter might have been tweaked enough to cause a leak where none had been before.  Good hunting!

Oh, to be as young as I think I am.

Is the leaking oil just like your engine oil or is it more grimy/black?  If so, it could be the rear crankshaft seal.

Also check the 3/4 inch bolt that holds the oil filter housing to the block. You will  have to go underneath the car to ensure its tight.

Also, check around the filler tube!

Tightened the 3/4 inch bolt.  I'm hoping that will do the trick.  It was loose.  Ran the car for about 10 minutes and put more paper underneath.  No oil yet.  I'll check again in the morning.  Here's hoping!
