    Newbie with 'dim' questions!!

Hi everyone. Just taken delivery of my restored 63 Mk1 Midget and I have a few dim questions !!!

    1. I was expecting the brakes to be dire but blimey!!! I am thinking of installing the Moss disc brake kit - should I go for the 9 inch or 10 inch kit and with or without a servo??? Or should I just try to improve the exisiting brakes - they are the very early discs - the calipers could be stuck - pads worn - dont know until I investigate. I am more interested in safety than originality.

    2. Where can I get a new ignition key from??

    3. It doesnt have seat belts - but I would feel happier with seat belts - is it likely that there any mounting points??  If not - any advice on how to go about it??? (I might put 3 point harnesses in).

    4. Best source for a hardtop??? (This car has sidescreens rather than windows.)

Thanks in advance and sorry to appear thick!!!

    Re: Newbie with 'dim' questions!!

Hi Billy  I thought all midgets had "wind up" windows thats what set them apart from Mk II
Sprite's, MGs get roll ups ,Mk II Sprite dont ,MGs get 1100cc ,Sprite stays with 948cc and so on ,eh goes to show what I dont know . Any way the early disk brakes are fine if everything is up to snuff , if your going to have to rebuild everything and you most likly will, the latter 66-71 brake clutch asembully (you need the whole shebang) fits with abit of cutting and reinforsing and gives very nice feel. Ive converted many MkIs this way .Good value is to get tapered wheel bearings instead of rollers(dont think Moss supplys but Winners Circle has them along with uprated hubs if you can aford them)

lock asumbullys with new keys = Moss

3pt belts are a must = Moss , look at latter car to find afixing pts ,ring style mounts are better than plates, they self align

In my humbul opinion hard tops dont serve any perpose other than saving wear on your soft top in the winter months , they leak just about the same and if anything are noiser and they are heavy enough to feel in standerd motoring The only reasion we race with them is better arodynamics and most santioning bodys wont let you run them any way  Good Luck Spridgets are great fun!!!

    Re: Newbie with 'dim' questions!!

I've put together a little example page to show where the seatbelt mount points are in later Midgets.

    http://millenniumtree.com/share/midget/index.html

Hope that helps.  We bought our '69 Midget without seatbelts.  The first and best $100 we spent was to buy 3-point belts. (# 222-206)

The mount points hadn't been used in some time and the lower ones were quite rusty.  I cleaned the threads out with a wire brush as best I could, squirted some liquid wrench in there, then slowly tightened/loosened the seatbelt bolts repeatedly until they threaded all the way in.  (poor man's thread tap)  If you go slowly and carefully, you shouldn't hurt either the bolt or the mount.

The seatbelt kit came with all the nuts/bolts we needed.
