    oil leak

I have a 1971 MG Midget (GAN5).  After rebuilding the engine, new pistons, rings, main and rod bearings, gaskets, I am getting a MAJOR oil leak from the rear.  There is no rear seal.  What do I do?

    Dennis,

First, make sure you aren't doing anything that would tend to cause the crankcase to run under pressure. How is it vented? Next, getting all the gasketing detail just right at the rear of the sump is not easy. Third, setting up the "oil screw" details at the back of the engine is critical. Fourth, are you sure it isn't overfilled? Fifth, there is an oil seal conversion kit available which installs an actual lip type positive oil seal at the rear of the crankshaft. Now, don't you wish you knew all that BEFORE you put the motor back in?...

    Motorbill,

Sorry about not getting back sooner, I had to go on an assignment.  I checked everything you mentioned but still got a leak, so I purchased and installed the rear seal conversion kit and that took care of the problem.  It was expensive, though.

    Thank you,

    Dennis

    Dennis,

Is that you in the avatar? and what is the aircraft? Just curious, and I love classic biplanes.
