I am about to start the resoration on my 51 mgtd body, I want to buy the new wooden parts but my buddy whose a carpenter says he can duplicate most of what I need, my question is 1, what wood to use, 2, has anyone out there done this and is it more feasable to purchase out of the catalog, 3 ,what do I use to seal and preserve the wood either way

The original is ash hardwood, untreated or preserved in any way.  If your friend can re-create the pieces accurately, go for it.  Some are simple flat pieces, others have compound curves and angles to them.  The Moss pieces are good, but will need some minor adjusting to fit.  Any quality wood preservative/sealer should do.

Horst Schach has a great chapter in his book on rebuilding the body tub - "The Complete MG TD Restoration Manual".  Highly recommend the book - Moss carries it in their catalog.

We are currently doing a TD restoration which needed over 3/4 of all the wood replaced. We have used the Moss products with only minor fitment issues. Considering the fairly reasonable prices for these pieces, I wonder if your friend might not get tired of this project before long. I would. There are some great two part wood preservatives available now. They are actually extra thin epoxy which soaks into the wood fibre and stabilizes it just about forever! We ALWAYS use this on wood body frame cars. One hint, in case you were not aware. DON'T glue the wood joints! Screws only! Otherwise you'll crack the wood over bumps. Also, invest in some stainless wood screws for this purpose, for obvious reasons. Enjoy the project.
