    MGB 302 V8 Conversion

    Greetings and salutations.

I have a 77 that will be getting a 302 conversion. 302 because that's what I have laying on the garage floor but I am currently searching for a matching T5 transmission. I love to row my cars and be involved in the man/machine thingie instead of sitting there and going along for the ride.

Anyways, so it's September 2009 and I want to know the current state of things as it involves the 302/T5 into MGB.

    Chassis:
The rubber bumper cars are still the best ones to use right? If so is it true that no body modifications are necessary? I've heard you may need to impress the RHD firewall/passenger foot well to give way a wee bit with a suitable BFH.

    Engine Mounting:
There is no way I can afford the $3,800 front end kit and the additional $400 for the Ford kit that is offered by another vendor. So what are my options for an engine mount today? I found a website where someone mentioned an engine mount that just bolted on but I had a Microsoft moment and thought I bookmarked it but didn't it.

    Transmission Mounting:
I am hoping not to have to make one and would like know if there is one available.

    Thank you.

PS: I am being forced to do this since a vendor with a name starting with M and ending with S do not offer a "cheap" supercharger kit for us skinflints Big Smile

    Quicksilver-

Before you throw that engine in why not stroke it out to a 347?

If you plan to rebuild it they make complete rotating assemblies for not much $.

    Re: MGB 302 V8 Conversion

    Hello.

An astute suggestion but alas I am have set a spending limit for myself for this project and I recognise that there are other spendish items ahead of me. The 302 is  a known quantity as I used it in my Mazda B2200 aka fright machine

Going to get sundries from Lowes/Home Depot has never been more fun. This truck should have it's picture in the dictionary next to the definition of ultimate sleeper. Many a Corvette/Mustang owner around here have been caused to dip their throttle deeper than ever before Big Smile

At the next rebuild I will certainly upgrade the engine.

    Regards.

PS: Here's where we were at as of this morning:

    Re: MGB 302 V8 Conversion

    Some additional questions:

As far as oil pan is concerned what does the expert think of this arrangement? Will these clear our cross member friend or do I need to procure the Canton unit? Speaking of Canton what model number of their rear oil pan do we use?

Additionally I understand that I need to source an engine mount from an early 60s Mercury Comet. Would a kind soul please post a part number, or specific model and year of the Comet?

    What engine mounting is this?

    Q-

I believe the Ford Falcon is the same as the Merc Comet if this is any help.

Also, there are a number of websites that deal w/ MGB V-8 conversions that may be of more help to you. (Not that we aren't all very interested in your project here.)

    Re: MGB 302 V8 Conversion

The photos you posted don't open for me so I'm sort of in the dark as far as your questions there. As for general information on the Ford 302 swap into a late B I think you'll find what you're looking for at the British V8 Newsletter site. http://www.britishv8.org/index.htm   Plenty of different takes on the Ford installation with and without replacement crossmembers etc. I'd suggest getting in touch with Pete Mantell at Mantell Motor Sports http://www.britishv8.org/Sponsors/Mantell-Motorsport.htm He can answer all your questions quickly and professionally. I think that you'll have to notch the original B crossmember for clearance no matter what pan you use as the front mounted oil pump is what causes the low front part of the pan that interferes with the B crossmember. Even with the rear sump Bronco pan I believe that the crossmember still requires some additional clearance. I get the impression from your posts that you either don't have the equipment or else the experience to consider fabricating mounts etc yourself. If that's the case then someone like Pete is indeed the direction to turn.

    Re: MGB 302 V8 Conversion

    Hello:

Not sure why the pictures are not displaying but my blog for this conversion is at  http://quicksilver.celinacityonline.com/Blog/Blog.html

I visited the Mantell website but did not see any product listing specifically to my needs and left with a feeling that they are involved in only a turnkey situation. I guess I shouldn't make assumption and I will call today.

Hi Bill, just wanted to follow up that I spoke to Pete today for about 30 minutes. I found him to be a stand up straight shooting Guy, thanks for the recommendation.
