    Clunk when shifting

At my wits end..........once my 78 MGB warms up, 10 to 15 minutes of driving, I get a clunk when I shift from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. It doesn't do it from 3rd to 4th. I have replaced the U-joints, clutch, release bearing etc. All mounts seem to be solid and all crossmembers are tight. I also had a problem with a hissing type metallic noise when I was shifting ( sorry, best I could explain it ) which ended up being the baffles on my ANSA muffler. A couple quick bangs with a mallet and the hissing noise diappeared. Problem is, I still can't figure out that clunk. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is there a chance it's the dreaded diff clunk ???

    Re: Clunk when shifting

It does sound from your description like the "dreaded diff clunk" but that's not too hard to fix and usually doesn't present a problem unless it gets really bad and you abuse the car. For more information on the repair I suggest this "how to" from the Chicago Land MG Club. http://chicagolandmgclub.com/photos/b_clunk/

Thanks Bill and my apologies to The Austin/Healey people for posting in this forum. I'm not always the sharpest knife in the drawer.
