Fuel everywhere! Do float valves stick??

I had my Zenith Stromberg carb off while doing some other work and figured I would replace the float needle valve with one of the groose ball valve types that I found in my box of inherited parts.  Before doing this the everything been working fine, now gas just comes pouring of the jet.  The new valve I put in was still sealed in its packaging.  My question is this, does it seem likely that I the valave is bad or is there another posibility I'm overlooking?

    Thanks,

    Derrick

Join the club, Derrick.  I had the same experience. Couldn't believe it considering the hype that some of the suppliers put out.

I took the carb back off and the Grose jet out and rolled the ball around for a few minutes, figuring some debris from milling had gotten hung up.

It worked Ok for some months but the next time it flooded, out they went.

To be fair, I've heard folks say they were trouble free. I say they were lucky.

    Ditto poolboy!

I have to thank an old buddy from 25 years ago whom told me, when working on a car, "never through out the old parts for at least 1 month"!

I had the same thing happen to me...thank God (or Dave Zitnay) that I still had the old jet to re-install!!!

"never through out the old parts for at least 1 month"

     Words to live by....

By example After a 2 year trial, I adjusted and refitted the original steering column top bush on my MGB - far better than the reproduction replacement I'd been so eager to fit!

I did fish the old one out of the garbage as soon as the problem surfaced.  I'll put the old one back in this week and let everyone know how it goes.

    Thanks for the help!

Did you readjust the float level after installing the Gross jet?  The Gross jet sits a lot lower than the original needle valves and needs to be shimmed up to be close to the original height, then the float needs to be adjusted to the new height.  This is not to exonerate the Gross jet, it is just unusual for them to fail on initial installation, if the installation was done correctly.

The original  Gross jets were a great product.  I have had them in our TD for close to 30 years without a single problem.  That said, the company was sold and the product put out by the new has had a very disappointing reputation.  I would no longer recommend them to anyone.

Re: Fuel everywhere! Do float valves stick??

We've put in a bunch of Grose Jets with no problem. The reason for their design and development was that the tapered needle and seat could indeed stick. This has been a problem especially with the newer replacement ones. The sealing ball in the Grose jet has no sharp taper to stick in an orofice, and therefore, in theory at least, cannot stick CLOSED, as I have seen rather frequently with the needle type. But friends, dirt is dirt. And no valve can seal with debris in the opening. Replace your old rubber fuel hoses with modern fuel injection hose of the correct diameter, and install a good fuel filter BEFORE that point in the stream. Old style hose is attacked by the crap (alchohol) in our fuel, releasing tiny bits of it in a constant stream. I imagine some of it actually makes it all the way through the carburetters into the combustion chambers. Now THAT'S a heck of an alternative fuel!

Re: Fuel everywhere! Do float valves stick??

Well, Bill I took your advice about the fuel injection line not long after you brought it to our attention here on the Forum, waay back. I've passed it along on other Forums. Still, I ended up replacing the Grose jets because of flooding problems. I don't know about what the other folks who had flooding problems with Grose jets were using for fuel lines, but next time the subject cones up on one of the Forums, I'll ask. I do think the word is getting out about the fuel injection line being alcohol resistant; I'm doing my part.
