    Gearbox Problem

I recently replaced the gearbox in my 1979 MGB with one that was, according to the seller, refurbished.  Prior to the replacement my existing gearbox was slipping out of third gear and sometimes fourth gear.  I bought the refurbished gear box from a reputable seller on Ebay.  After having the gearbox, a new clutch, disk and pressure plate installed I find that this one too is slipping out of third gear.  Before I go after the seller I was wondering if this could be caused by some other problem with the car.  The refurbished gear box was from a 79 MGB and had the syncro rings and input shaft bearing replaced.

    Re: Gearbox Problem

It does sound like another worn synchro, but I'd also make sure that there isn't any obstruction to the lever around the tunnel opening or the bellows that would keep it from fully engaging. Try removing the gaiter and take a quick test drive, you can then see if there is any interference with the lever.

    Re: Gearbox Problem

That worked.  I lifted the boot and everything worked fine.  There was no obstrcution but the boot was very tight and it wouldn't let the shifter go all the way into third.  This was probably the problem all along and I replaced the trans in error.

    thanks Bill
