    Axle removal, 3000 BJ7

After some attempts, I have been unsuccessful in removing the driver side axle on a 3000 (1963) with a VIN# BJ7.  I eed to pull the axle to replace some hub studs.  I tried removing the 4 bolts holding the backing plate and using a slide hammer with no luck.  I see no other way it would come out as the differential cannot come out before the axles.  Am I missing some hidden (or in plain view) thing that needs to be removed or loosened before the axle will come out?  Perhaps it is really stuck?

     Thanks, Mark J.Confused

    Mark,

To remove the axle and hub on a BJ7 doesn't require the removal of the backing plate bolts. Once you have removed the half shaft (I'm assuming you've done this) you simply remove the big nut, which is a bit of a sticky wicket since it is odd sized and eight sided in most cases, the hub will be ready to withdraw. Due to its being a semi-push fit on the tube it can sometimes be quite reluctant to cooperate. The manual (Do you have one? you certainly should if you are getting this deeply into the vehicle.) calls out special tool # 18G 220 with adaptors 'A', 'D', and 'E. This is shorthand for, "You need a puller". It will bear on the center tube and bolt down around a few of the studs. Then when you screw in on the puller it will withdraw the hub and bearings. There are a few critical measurements for reassembly. I'd really encourage you to get the Factory Manual reprint available from Moss and others.
