    Engine backplate locktabs?

OK, now I'm confused, and so it seems are our good hosts.

Whilst all set to replace the front and back plates on my engine (18GB series) and in sorting through the parts I'll need, I notice that the engine locktab set does not contain any tabs for the rear engine plate bolts. Nor is there any reference to such an item in the Moss catalogue. My engine was built with four tabs, two long and two short, each serving a pair of bolts inside the bellhousing. In addition of course, there is the rear oil seal retainer, part number 120-830.

I spoke to a member of staff at Moss about this, who did not recall ever having seen such parts available or fitted to an engine. Can anyone else shed some light on this mystery please?

    Cheers,

    Ed

    Ed,

In the recesses of the colander I use for a memory I seem to recall an MG engine or two with these locktabs. They were dropped as excess baggage a long time ago. Lockwashers and proper torque makes them useless. Carry on, good fellow.

    Bill, you're a star!

Lockwashers it is then. Not like this is going to be a concourse trophy decider on my carWink, and anyway, that would be some devoted judging!

BTW, happy Guy Fawkes & bonfire night everyone.

    Thanks again,

     Ed

    For anyone who cares...

The tabs appear to have been a fleeting feature from '65 to '67 on 18GB engines, and are readily available from at least one other well known source.

    Ed,

Yep. I knew I had seen them installed back a ways in history. But I also know that I rarely saw them REinstalled!!

    Have fun
