Hey All!, I am new to this site so I don't know if this is the right place to put but here goes. I have a 1980 MGB LE and I just had my rims beadblasted to bare aluminum. My car has 87,000 miles and I want to repaint the rims. What color do i paint the centers, is there a kit?, Can I clear coat on top of the aluminum? Looking for any advice I can get! How about this.. Does any one know anyone with LE rims? I have the wheels back from bead blasting and they are wrapped up in bags because I can't paint them yet. Right now I'd love to hear from anyone with these rims, anyone who knows someone with these rims, what ever, I'm darn near desperate!!!

The painted areas should be fairly glossy black. The machined areas should be pretty bright. Clearcoating would be an excellent idea to prevent tarnishing of the aluminum.

Now that's what I am talking about!! So just glossy black, is there a paint code do you think ? do they have a stencil made up for these wheels? That would make it a lot easier. My poor car needs her wheels back!

I don't know of a paint code. I'd probably just use Duplicolor Gloss Black engine paint w/ceramic content. This stuff really sticks. We use it on suspension parts all the time. It's the best rattle can stuff I've encountered in 40+ years of this madnesss. Forget the idea of a stencil. I don't think one exists for this, and the ones I've seen for other wheels just don't give satisfying results, at least not for me. Use painter's masking tape and an Ex-acto knife. Arm yourself with plenty of #11 blades. Change them out frequently and you"ll do fine. Just be patient. Good luck.

WHAAAAA!

Bill: Double check yourself on this one. The wheel centers are not glossy black. I know, I know,  I would have sworn this was the color for years too. And did. We have an original LE on site that has about 30 miles on it and has never been out in the sun.  (shame!) 

They are a darkish grey color, about equivalent to the color of a grey business suit. It would be lovely to supply a paint code, but I've not seen one listed.

Ok. we did a pretty good job of photographing the new wheels. These are an exact color match to original. (i held them up next to our car)

The lower left hand spoke gives a good idea of the correct color. The entire wheel was also clear coated including the rim. Personally I dont' think I would clear coat a re-painted wheel. The coating yellows with age and then has to be fully stripped. I think if you don't have to worry about salt then I would just leave the rim and raised sections polished.

I'm happy to stand corrected on this. I guess the ones I've seen had been repainted. Personally, I think they'd look better on a Black car if they were black, but the Originality Police might get after you. I have found the clear coat from Duplicolor stays clear, and keeping the bare polished would be more troublesome, but...To each his own.  Enjoy

I've consulted another source and they too say that it's a dark grey metallic. Any Idea if they are clearcoated?

I just had my done and they look great! I'm from Northwest Massachusetts and I can give you information of the shop that did mine. (Technique, paint color, etc.) It is true that the color is not black. Black might look better; I'm not sure, but it was important to me that the rims looked original. I'll try to post a picture when I get my car out of storage.

Any Info you have whatsoever I would love to have. My car is still on cinder blocks and its getting nice out
