    52 TD lock plate set

My pops was over today to examine our project today.  We have removed the rockers a few different times for adjustments and so on.  The lock plate set has been bent and re-bent at least two times, so we were thinking of replacing them as they are getting weak.  My dad swears they are not needed since the rocker bracket bolts are torqued.  He says American engines don’t use them at all.  Should I worry about replacing the lock plates again or just go without them?  Does it matter?

    Thanks

    Rich

    TD52,

I use them since they were there in the first place. The Brits were not known for including things that were not needed, especially back in the "export or die" days Also, though they are torqued, the torque isn't all that great. Frankly, I imagine some of those thin serrated style (not star) washers would do just fine. On the other hand, it would certainly be easy to make a set of plates, and then you'd sleep easy on the matter.
