    Fender Mirrors

I have a 52 TD and have thought about putting front fender mirrors on it. I was told that these were not supplied or offered as an accessory on the 52. Does anyone know the true story?

    Re: Fender Mirrors

Your informant is partially correct.  Judging from factory PR photos of TCs, TDs, and TFs, none left Abingdon with any mirror other than the center-mounted one on the scuttle.  Nor are they listed as factory-installed items, according to the NEMGT's reference manual, "The "T"-Series MG Handbook".

Fender mirrors were a dealer-installed item (along with a lot of other stuff, like heater boxes, etc).  They were mounted where that 19-year old mechanic apprentice felt like drilling a hole in the fender.  No standard location.

My fellow "T"-series drivers who have fender-mounted mirrors pretty much agree they're unusable, due to fender vibration and being constantly knocked out of position by people walking past the car.  And, it's a two person operation to re-align them.  They do look good, however ...

Another option (which I use) are mirrors mounted on the windshield posts.  Vibration free, and easy to adjust from inside the car.  Moss sells the official set ($), and a private party sells a very nice period-looking set.  Again, not factory original, but it looks good on the car!

    Jeez Dick,

I didn't think there was anything in a TD that was vibration free. Oh,... you mean when it's parked. I get it.

LOL - OK Motorbill, I stand corrected.  Parked and engine off.  Big Smile

    Re: Fender Mirrors

I've not had any problem using the driver's side fender mirror on our TD, in fact, since we are not shy about taking the TD on the freeways, I use it quit a lot when changing lanes.  It is a convex mirror, so gives quite a wide field of view.  The passenger side fender mirror is just a flat mirror, so it not as useful and I use a windshield bracket mounted mirror on that side for a good view of what's over there.  The only problem I've had with the fender mirrors is that they are hard to readjust after someone hits them when walking by the car.

    Re: Fender Mirrors

My TC came to me with those dealer mounted fender mirrors... you are right they were unusable due to fender vibration.  I removed them and filled the holes with the convex mirrors from Moss (if you need information on how to find Moss let me know).  They look better than the vintage mirrors and work great.  They are easy to use, don't vibrate too much and aren't really very hard to aim... that is important because they need frequent aiming whenever someone bumps into them (almost daily).

The Moss design is much better, that long thin arm on the vintage mirrors really amplifies the vibrations.  The slightly convex surface of the mirror makes all the difference!

    Re: Fender Mirrors

Very nice looking TC Terry. I have a TF and like Terry, I prefer driving with the screen down; purchased two motorcycle mirrors (Much less than anything from a LBC specialist) and mount them in the slots on the windscreen posts. The only real drawback is that you have to take them off in order to change the position of the w/s and then put them back on. I did not want to drill and tap the posts
