    zero oil pressure

Just noticed that my '58 AH 100-6  BN6 that zero oil is registered on the dash oil pressure gauge.  What besides non functioning oil pressure gauge or non functioning oil pump could cause this and how should I proceed?  I recently replaced the stock oil filter with a spin-on adapter and filter but just removed the filter to make sure it was installed correctly and it seems to be.  Any ideas?

    jcb58ah,

Let's get the sequence of events down first, so we can figure out what's happening. What oil pressure did you have before the problem? Did the system lose pressure suddenly?, or over a period of time?, or did it lose pressure immediately upon installing the spin-on conversion?

There are any number of reasons to show no pressure on the gauge. Some of them are not serious. Some of them are very serious. Have you heard any expensive sounds? Have you driven the car while indicating no pressure? You should not drive it until you've determined what's happening.

    Let us know.

    Re: zero oil pressure

I've got allot of experience with low oil pressure and it's causes. Thankfully motorbill was there to guide my path through it all!

Have you tried another gauge yet? They are relativley cheap, (about $15 from the local auto parts store), and it will take all of 10 minutes to hook it up. It will answer allot of questions immediately, and maybe even put your mind to rest if it turns out to be a bad gauge on your dashboard.

In any event, as motorbill wrote, DON'T DRIVE IT until you find out what's going on!

    Re: zero oil pressure

motorbill66  -   Unfortunately I had not previously looked at the oil pressure.  Had previously decided that the engine might need a rebuild, partly on your advice, because of possibly to much end play in the crank and was looking around to try to find any obvious problems.  The engine is a little noisy but no sounds in particular.  Have not driven the car but have been starting it with no problem.  My son is sending a gauge so it can be compared to the dash gauge.  I consider myself pretty much a novice on the engine but have rebuilt the gear box, carburetors, cylinder head and front end plus a lot of smaller jobs.  I'm learning.  Thanks for your help.

Davey   -    Thanks for your reply!  Had already arranged that my son send a gauge to compare to the dash gauge.
