Success at Bret's MG Skunk Works....

    Well sort’a...

As some of you know I've already installed the Moss EFI kit on my 78B. Well heres another update.

I finally made some time the other day to pull the old restrictive manifold & Cat and replaced it with my new custom intake & 3 into one header. Don’t worry folks I still plan on installing an aftermarket catalytic converter down the road.

Consider this a fitting & test run – kind of like what they do with development aircraft by testing the engine while on the ground. Well despite some minor hardware issues everything bolted up just as planned and I’ve incorporated all the original emissions equipment (save the cat) and it fired up after a quick jump start from my truck.

Then a surprise! That cool looking 3 into 1 header ain’t so cool looking anymore. Because the paint bubbled up on the number one & number four exhaust down pipe while the paint flaked completely off of the center Siamese (2 & 3) down pipe. In fact the whole header is going to have to be completely resurfaced. But that’s why we have test runs like this – rather than while driving down the road. Anyway once I figure out where I’m going to place inline Cat with a flange fitting – I’ll have it either powder coated or jet-hotted along with the custom intake.

By the way – during my test run I’m sure I PO’ed a few neighbors because I was running strait headers. As cool as it sounded I’m going to have to figure out something temporary to link the header to the rear muffler for harmony of the neighborhood. ;)

    So what ya think?

Never known of a paint to hold up very well on exhaust headers. Powder coating really won't do much better. Not sure but Jet Hot might work. Anyway, I have had really good success with ceramic coating.

How long did you let the paint cure?  I painted my headers and they flaked too, but I certainly didn't give them much more than a day to dry.  Guess I was a little too excited :P

Actually I didn't paint them - they came already painted when I bought them from Moss.

    3-1 Short Exhaust Header PN# 459-011 (Moss MGB-MGC cataloge P#A27)

But again, while the smoke had me concerned - I'm not too upset about the paint blistering off. I'm just making sure my set up works before I tear it all back apart to install the new cam, roller rockers & alloy head. While that's taking place I'll have the intake manifold & header sent out for either powder coating or Jet hot treatment. But before I will look into the Ceramic coating.

Truth is I'm trying to keep the "bling" factor down under the bonnet and Jet-hot wants extra for the more sedate flat black that I really wanted. Perhaps Ceramic coating (provided the cost isn't out of bounds) is the way to go.

My headers came with paint too, but from what I understand that paint is just there to protect them from deteriorating while in the warehouse.  I stripped and repainted with Duplicolor.  It came off in some spots and stayed on in others.  I kind of think that if I gave it more cure time it would have faired better, but that is speculation.
