    TF1500 engine problem?

I'm new to the forum and MG ownership.

I took over ownership of a 55 TF1500 from my father two years ago. He restored it in 1984 and it has not had a lot of miles put on since then. The end of last year it started with an occasional metalic clanking that seemed to be associated with the gearbox/clutch. When the sound would occur pressing or releasing the cluch would cause it to stop. Recently my wife was coming back from the store when the sound occured and  remained. She made it home and parked it. I have not been able to get the engine to stay running now. When you turn her over she continues to make the noise. By placing the hand crank in her and turning the engine it sounds like there is a grinding noise somewhere around the fly wheel/ clutch area. When you press the clutch pedal down the sound significantly lessens. My guess is something came loose. Any suggestions?
