You can pick up a mechanic's stethiscope at your local parts store. To use it, put it in your ears like a doctor would and touch it to the area where you believe the sound is coming from. The sound will get louder, the closer to the source you get. It's so sensitive, I use it to check if fuel injectors are working or not.
