inherited MGTD 1950 - aluminum ring on rear of motor (oil seal adapter? harmonic balancer?) do you know

Okay, so i inherited this wonderful 1950 MGTD and back in the day I had another and rebuilt it. I intend to rebuild this one also. But there is something on the back of the motor (mostly assembled motor) to which the flywheel would be attached.  It is an aluminum ring or housing or something aluminum. It is held together by two hex bolts.  I don't know what it is and whether to leave it on as the prior engine shop in florida apparently placed it there or what.

I think it is an old Moss Part.  My friend who died, Ernie Betts from the Tampa area, is the one who bought the part but I think the machine shop installed it.

    any help would be appreciated.
