I have a 77MGB roadster that I am restoring and I have lots of questions. The body is in pretty good shape but does need some minor body work and a paint job. The engine had a spun rod bearing so I have the engine and tranny out and have just about completed the engine overhaul. I have the oil pan on and the rocker cover on. The basic engine I can do, now I need some input about carbs, intake and exhaust manifolds, and ignition system. The engine looks stock but the air pump has been removed and the air rail manifold has been cut off and crimped on one end. Someone has up-dated the distributor to HEI. The carb says Stromberg 175 CD-2.
I am a diesel mechanic by trade (large trucks and boats, not cars) so I have some basic knowlege but this is my first restore project and the first british car I've owned. I have a pretty nice shop and a good supply of tools but no experience with this engine or car. I could go on and on but this is my first post and I have some basic questions to get me started.
- I have looked at Moss and Victoria B books quite a bit and have bought some engine parts from both but is one better than the other?
- Should I up-date my carb and exhaust system while I have this thing all apart? I live in an area where I don't have to pass an emmision test so what kind of smog stuff should I have and what should I take off and save for a rainy day?
- My interior is pretty bad and so is the soft top. I see several options in the book for both and need some input on which way to go.
Thanks for any help and if you know of any good web sites that might be helpfull, that would be great.
