    Re: brakes

    clifford,

Yes, it can be done. In our shop, we have done this modification several times. It is not as simple as it might seem though, and there are a number of considerations you might not think about at first. It involves MGB components, and depending on what kind of wheels you want, you may even have to change the rear axle. If you're still interested contact me off line or through the private message function. I have written up the procedure for making the neccessarry mods and it is more than eight pages! I'm long winded (ask my customers, friends, etc.) but I don't think I have the endurance to put that much info on the forum.

    Re: brakes

I have a 52 TD with 1500 MGA drum brakes all around. In the front, it  has the complete MGA  king pin assy., the rear is a complete MGA rear end. These drums are 10" diameter vs. 9' for original TD. I have no experience driving a TD with stock brakes, but these work very well; hard, straight stops without fade. My TD won't accelerate to speed quick enough to check for fade from repeated high speeds. For that matter, it won't reach what I would call "high-speed"! The front end parts are bolt-on (except the brake lines are UNF on the MGA and whitworth on the TD. but the rear end requires adapting the spring perches to the spring spacing on a TD. In addition to larger brakes, I now have wire wheels. Jim

    Re: brakes

motorbill66, I too would like to install front disk brakes with steel wheels on my 53 TD.  My MG is not stock and would like better braking power. I would like a copy of your instructions when completed.  I once saw this set up about 10 years ago at MOSS Motors in Goleta, CA and the owner said he did it himself with either MGA or MGB components.  Couldn't remember which.  If you can help me out I would be very thankful.

    Re: brakes

    Folks,

Changing situations at the shop have caused me to be really busy lately, but I promise to get my act together on this subject and write something introductory for the forum within the next few days. This will familiarize you with the depth of the project so that you can judge whether you'd like to get into it. Cheers.

    Re: brakes

I hope you will have some time in the near future helping us with converting the TD to front disk brakes.  I have seen this done on a TD using MGB front disk brakes set up.

    Re: brakes

    Sorry guys,

I just plain dropped the memory ball on this. I'm on my way racing this weekend, but I'll take a stab at it when I get back.
