    spin oil filter?

Does anyone know what is the best spin on oil filter thsat I can go down and buy for my 250? If it makes a difference, I have a oil cooler with it. I'm also going to put in synthetic, is a 10/30 or 10/40 probably the best weights to use.

looking for some feedback, thanks tr_man

    Re: spin oil filter?

In my travels online I found a spreadsheet of all the filters that are compatable with the spin on setup. I can't find it now. Could swear I saved it to my system. Oh well. I happened to have a Motorcraft FL400S (which was on the list) because that's what goes on our 1991 escort. So I used it this weekend. I have 150k on the escort. No smoke, no oil loss. I have only used the FL400 on it. It use to be an FL400A. Now an "S". It says there is a silicone anti drain back valve now. They were cheap was the main reason. Less than $5 each.

    YMMV

    Re: spin oil filter?

    Hi TR-Man !

Good filter to use is a Unipart with the valve, this valve is very important ; the Fram CPH3600 has this valve, but its bigger than the Unipart. For the engine oil, I use in my TR6 Mobil1 SuperSyn 10w30 or the Amsoil Synthetic 10w30 (i'm in Quebec-Canada) ; if you are in the south, use Amsoil 20w50 ; for the carbs, use the Redline Synthetic 10W30, very good.

    Bye ! Mike

    Re: spin oil filter?

Here is a pointer to a web page that has a pile of info on filters.

     http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html#w51515

    And some more info...

    http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters.html

A list of filters includes Fram PH3600 or Cooper Z25 or Purolator PER195 or Mobil-1 M1-209 or Motorcraft FL-400s or Wix 51516

Here is a list I just pulled from my most recent club newsletter.

Spin On Oil Filters for TR250 / TR6
    Brand             Part #
    Wix                1516
    NAPAGold      1516
    Purolator        PL20195
    puolater          P20195
    Fram              PH3600
    K&N              HP2009
    Crosland        GFE148
    Wix               51516
    Purolator        PER195
    AD                 ACX21+
    Motor-             FL400-S

I am hearing that WIX is the best. Check out the study above.

As far as oil goes. The good old oil is the best. 20-W50 is what everyone says. I use regular Castrol GTX 20-W50.

    Re: spin oil filter?

I just purchased a spin on adapter. How do you install it? Do you spin it on with the center bolt then tighten it up? Should be simple.

    Re: spin oil filter?

I have been using the Wix in my '250 for years.  After some research I spoke with a parts supplier friend of mine.  He said the Wix filter was by far made of the best materials.  If memory serves me (always in doubt at this juncture), the internal filter element was of cardboard not paper like the rest of the field.  That made it stand up longer and retain its filter capability better then all others.  Subsequently an old British Leyland (as in English, factory trained) mechanic informed me that his shop had a study done and they too came up with the conclusion that Wix was superior.

That was enough for me, and I have used the Wix 51516 without any indication of problems.

PS.  I also have an oil cooler with thermostat.  And run Castrol GTX  5W50 (synthetic)

    Re: spin oil filter?

The K&N HP2009 is my choice. That's all I've ever used since it was the recommended filter with the adapter.

The WIX might be better for all I know, but since K&N was recommended by the manufacturer, I defer to their judgment.

    Re: spin oil filter?

Your on the right track with the filter. I've always used the fram ph3600. However, please save yourself a lot of grief and dont use the sythetic oil. I say this because I've been running it as well for the last year in mine. I know have a wiped cam lobe. There sre several good articles about the lack of zinc in oil, this is needed in flat tappet engines. If you need a list of them, I can get them for you. I've known about this , but thought it only applied for break in...wrong!! So dont set yourself up for a rebuild needlessly. This applies to all old flat tappet engines, I've gone through 3 cams in my chevy 454. All breakins were done properly, with the proper oil. The Chevy went to castorol oil after 5k miles, and my 250 the same. Like I said I ran the good synthetic this last year. Dont do it. If you have any questions let me know.

    Re: spin oil filter?

    tr_man,

The flat tappet consideration is a real one and as you stated, not just during engine break-in!  All the flat tappets engines require ZDDP in the engine oil. Unfortunately, ZDDP has been removed from almost every oil on the market, synthetic or otherwise.

There are some oils that still have it, AND it's recently been added to a few more, but after reading too many oil bottle labels, I still can't tell you which ones! There are other people on this forum whom would know this information.

For my peace of mind, I run with Castrol and personally add the ZDDP that I purchase from Moss (220-805).
