    Stripe Kit

I'm in the process of taking my 79 Midget apart for painting this winter, it has what I think is a factory stripe kit or a dealer add on kit(I've seen the same stripe on other Midgets) at first I didn't like it but now I've grown quite fond of it and want to replace it after the repaint.  The big "2" ,Moss and V.B. don't show kits for Midgets. Does anyone know of a source for stripe kits for rubber bumper Midgets?

    Thanks,

    Doug

    Re: Stripe Kit

    Doug:

These kits sat on dealers shelves for many years with no movement. There are a number of long term British parts houses who specialized in doing dealer buy outs during the 80s. Your best bet is to send out some e-mails to some of these smaller specialists with an accurate description of the kit you are looking for. E-bay is very much a hit or miss and the liklihood of a slow mover like this kit showing up is not very good.

You may pay more for the kit when you show interest in purchasing one, but to be honest, the specialist that has been shelving the part for the last 20 years deserves a little due.

The major problem to face is that the factory part number for the kit is going to be difficult to find. I checked the MG-Austin Collision Guide, which is the usual place to find these dealer installed kit numbers, but although the MGB one is listed, the Midget is not. I'm guessing the kit you need is the black flash with "special" down each side of the car. This kit was installed on a number of rubber bumper cars by dealers and if memory serves it was a factory produced product, so should have a BLM prefix part number.

    Good luck on your search.

    Re: Stripe Kit

hey, that was cool. I clicked on the picture and went to the original on your web site. Just like clicking my heels together.

Hmm. I've not seen this stripe design on a Midget before. The one I was thinking about was the "Special" kit that came out in 76. There is a good picture of it in the "Original Sprite/Midget" book.

The one on your car looks like the same general design as used on the MGB. Check out this link:

    http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29112&SortOrder=1

Sorry for the poor image. It looks like you could do a bit of trimming with a razor to remove the "B" and perhaps get what you need. Lining up the tape widths on the shorter car may be a problem though. It would be worth trying if you were set on the kit.

The original part number for the MGB kit was BLM105211, so chances are the Midget kit part number would be somewhere close. Sorry, but we have the MGB graphics manufactured specifically for us and the company SFAIK does not make any others.

If we had a ground swell of other Sprite/Midget owners that wanted these side stripe kits, we would look at having them made, but even the MGB ones are not huge sellers.

    Hoping this is some help

    Re: Stripe Kit

    Kelvin,

Thank you I think I can make that work. The car in the pitcure is not mine but was the only one that I could find with the correct stripe,I didn't have a pitcure of my car that showed the stripe well enough. Thanks again I really think I (or the guys at the paint shop) can make the "B" kit work.

    Regards,

    Doug

    Re: Stripe Kit

New here so hello, I had to have my 75 Midget repainted in 2000 paint was way too faded in several shades of blue. I wanted the "Special" decal back on it since it has the dash decal also. I took it a local sign man who does truck graphics he took print off the car and made me another decal. This maybe a option for you.

    Re: Stripe Kit

    Doug,

I have a '79 Midget with the same striping as yours.  I'm looking at a repaint job as well and have had the same luck finding the correct stripe kit (that is, none.)  Did the MGB stripe kit work out for you?  I'm curious to see if you tried it and how it turned out.

    Cheers,

    Dan

    Re: Stripe Kit

    Dan,

I decided not to go back with the srtipe after all, after it came back from the painter I liked it with out the stripe. V.B. does offer a similar stripe for a MGB, part # 10-870, I think it would work leaving the "B" off.  The stripes will be longer and will need to be cut down to size.  I went as far as to get the stripe, but I just could not bring myself to put it on so I sent it back.

    Hope this helps

    Doug

    Re: Stripe Kit

Thx for the info.  Did you remove the old stripe kit yourself or did the painters do it?

    Re: Stripe Kit

The stripe kit was part of the Special Edition package that was applied by US dealerships starting in 1976.  Besides the "Special" striping, the package included an AM/FM radio, chrome wheel trim rings, and a luggage rack.  The stripe kit came in 2 colors silver and black.  Both colors have appeared for sale on occasion on Ebay.  Out of curiosity what color are you looking for?

    Re: Stripe Kit

Seems like we both have the Midget Special, but the thread is about a different set of stripes that are illustrated in the picture in the 29 Dec 07 post.  I assumed they were talking about the Special Edition striping.  Anyway, that dash emblem you show is for the Anniversary in 1975 which makes sense since you have a 75 Midget.  A slight twist is that my 76 also has the dash emblem, but it was actually built in Oct 75 hence the emblem.  The emblem and the Special "package" are not related.  I've seen later cars with the Special options, but not the dash emblem.

    Re: Stripe Kit

My 76 has the space for the octagon, but no ocagon.  Does anyone have any idea where I can get one?

    Thanks in advance
