Sounds fantastic davey. I'm still wrestling with the city management over the right to build my small (24 x 32) shop. Can't wait to see the photos of yours.

    Re: Tough choice?

Guys, I am envious! Sounds as tho Davey will need a GPS locater on those special tools that all of us have and treasure!  Davey, a very wise strategy you adopted there, almost the best of both worlds I'd say.

I have a somewhat smaller erection! Im tied to the footprint of a suburban one-car garage [= two LBSCs] but no room for working or all the junk I shipped from Ireland. However it has a high ceiling  sooo a steel frame to give me a mezzanine floor and strong enough to take a winch when needed, is where Im going.Ive boxed in the attic space to give me a light workshop and Retreat. I think Bills recommendations re the creature comforts will also be incorporated. Steel is up and painted, flooring next week , functional by Xmas I hope.  We are all going to get a lot of work done this winter!!      Cheers  - - - - - steve

    Re: Tough choice?

This is the tough time. Construction of the shop is nearing an end, but so are my liquid asset$$! Those younger, stronger guys aren't cheap!

Outfitting the shop-mahal will come in time as I restock some greenbacks, so the anticipation is overwhelming right now, but that's probably a good thing. It will give me time to seriously consider the best use for this space.

To save some money, I'll be doing the siding and wiring.

Hey...does anybody know of any deals on garage doors?

    Great going, davey,

I'm hoping to have something similar when I retire in a few years, but you have it now! Cool!

    Re: Tough choice?

You couldn't figure out any way to make that one of your students' "projects" and get some donated labor? Smile

I replaced the garage doors on my house and found the best deal through Lowes as I remember. Went ahead and got the inuslated door for the work shop and plain steel for the garage. The shop temps are pretty easy to control and the garge doesn't get too bad either even with the non insulated doors. One hint on the wiring, you can't ever have too much light or too many electrical outlets, and add some 220v drops around the shop where you can, they may eventually come in very handy for welders, air compressors, A/C units, or even an oven to cure paint and powder coatings. It's so much easier to add them now before you seal the walls and such a pain later.

    Re: Tough choice?

Sage words from Bill Young about the amount of light and electrical outlets! I have experience in this area, so that's the least of my concerns.

Someone in work suggested that I add pinball machines and perhaps a pool table. Then I can walk around with one of those coin changers on my belt. Heck, even if I'm in there alone, it'd be cool!

    Re: Tough choice?

Davey, if you can scrape up the coin I'd go ahead and run some drops for the compressed air as well. That's one thing I didn't do in my shop and now very much wish I had. I don't want to add the piping over the painted walls and I find that only having one source for air is sometimes inconvenient as I'm having to drag hoses around the shop and also do a quick change with air tools instead of being able to use two hoses with different tools attached.
