    Lost my brakes

My 70 B lost it's brakes the other day. Found the fluid has leaked from the brake failure switch, which I guess, means the brake failure valve seals are done. Is the only purpose of this valve for brake failure or does it also serve as a proportional valve?

       Thanks

    Re: Lost my brakes

I've had mine apart on my 70 B (about 10 years ago) and believe it is failure only. The pressure differential shuts off flow to the front or rear (as necessary) allowing the "good" circuit to continue working to bring the car to a stop. Otherwise no motion would be transmitted to the good circuit as the pressure would folllow the path of least resistance to the failed circuit.

    Re: Lost my brakes

Yes, the pressure differential warning device is only there to alert you to the fact that either the front or the rear brake hydraulic system is compromised. However, it does not shut the flow to the bad system off. Just imagine the litigation that would take place if there were ANYTHING in the vehicle that could possibly and purposely disable your brake system in any way whatsoever. The movement of the shuttle spool is restricted so that it cannot do this. Availability of the switch was a bit sketchy last time I had to redo one, as was the kit. Also, there are two different kits. Call Moss tech and get it REAL straight which one is available and whether it will work on your car/valve.

    Re: Lost my brakes

If it comes down to not being able to get parts to repair this valve, can you bypass it with a 3way on the front and an inline on the rear. It looks as though the master is not working to the rear brakes, scary thought as I've been driving on the interstate as a daily driver.  The dash light never did illuminate, it does test, and the switch and wiring check good, so the valve never shuttled over ,or it never made ground though the valve body.

Have the valve off car and apart, also the one from my parts car apart and a third one from who knows where, that I can not get apart. I hope I can make one good one from the parts. Have ordered repair kit from moss p/n 181-995 ,which has been back ordered.

Now I need to look at master, I have other issuses more pressing now so it may be the weekend before I get to the master, I'll have to drive the Sonata for now. ( BORING)!

Thanks for the replys I'll be in touch with findings

    Re: Lost my brakes

    planertired,

Techincally, as a professional in the field I would never council you to disable/remove any safety device on an automobile. So, let me say this:

If we were converting this machine for off-road or racing use, we'd remove the device and use plain plumbing fittings. We would also have the customer sign a statement to that effect.

Beyond that, it seems as though you have a master cylinder problem. You will need to overhaul or replace that component at the least, I think. It's actually a better thing by far to lose your rear brakes than your fronts, as they do most of the work in stopping you, and impart stability. If only the rear brakes had been working we might not be communicating about this. When only rear brakes function, you lose all controlability in an emergency, or even a moderately hard, stop.

    Re: Lost my brakes

Finally got around to looking at the master, could not get rear brake to bleed, removed master from car to bleed on bench, no go. Disassembled master, found the link between the two pistons broken. When I first rescued car 8 years ago,I replaced master, when I had some spare time I disassembled the old master and found the link was broken,   is this a problem with the lockheed units or I'm the lucky one to find this has happened twice?

Also the repair kit for the brake fail switch arrived, the o-rings are a smaller diameter than the piston, When it rains it pours, gotta love the challenge of old cars!
