    Distributor install

Recently got engine back from the machine shop for my 65-66 TR4A. According to the shop manual, I need to set the proper dist gear end play when re-assembling. It states that I should put a washer under the gear extension, put pedestal in place and then measure the gap under the pedestal. Then do the math and determine how many packing washers to use under the pedestal. As it turns out, the gap I have is over the spec without any washer under the gear. Do I just go ahead and assemble without any packing washer or is something probably wrong??

It's pretty difficult to get an accurate reading of this gap because things want to rock all over the place while you are doing it. Can I assume that you have left the distributor itself out when doin this? (you should) There may indeed be something wrong, and it usually involves the oil pump drive. Look there and report back.

Thanks for the suggestion. Turns out to be operator error. When I went back and carefully re-assembled and measured, it turns out that I had 4-5 thou clearance (within spec) without any packing washers. That's why I didn't remember removing any washers when I dis-assembled. All seems to be fine. Now on to the many other issues in the restoration.
