I'd like to thank Bill Young for his wonderful hospitality in is beautiful home town! Bill is a very interesting, experienced gentleman whose love of British cars is only eclipsed by his experience in electronics!
We toured the annual SkillsUSA national competition and witnessed 5000 students compete against each other in trade and occupational areas ranging from automotive, hairdressing, carpentry, electronics, law enforcement, computers, etcetera; there are 94 competitions in all. As we watched dozens of these, Bill was commenting on the specifics of various tasks for almost every competition. He's a very experienced man.
I'm pleased to say the even though my electronics student could have used 2 more seconds- yes, just 2 more seconds to complete the final task, he finished #7 in the nation. His hand was actually in motion to hit the button indicating his completion when the clock ran out!
Whether the students won the gold or finished at bottom is almost insignificant as they all had to have survived local, regional and state competitions just to get to KC, MO. The student competitors at nationals are the top 2% in the country. I'm very proud of all of them, and it's quite gratifying to see such a qualified group of young technicians to take on the reigns of keeping this country working for the next generation!
On their death bed, nobody ever said, "Gee I wish I'd spent more time at work!"
