    64 mg midget

    HI can someone help ?

my MG is sweet but has a little problem ,It's started to splutter then stop  this has happened 2 or 3 times . when she has cooled down she starts no problem and goes like a rocket what can this be (when she first stops if I pull out the choke she will start and run but only for  2 to 3 seconds)

can it be the fuel pump, points or just *** in the fuel line

    Hi

I've had a similar problem and it turned out to be a bad ignition condenser also know as capacitor in the distributer.  It's a cheep try.

    Good luck

When the car stops, try to determine any information about the three components required for an to engine run.  1=fuel, 2=spark, 3=air.  when you have all three in the right proportions and at the right time, an engine runs and takes you to the store.  You can eliminate most of the spark problem with an MG when you put the $100 petronics electornics ignition in.

Mechanics today correctly have to "shotgun approach" a problem because of the complecity of the current cars and the high hourly rate the shops have to charge to stay in business

We have the advantage because our cars are prettty close to basic.   I would suggest that your approach could be to get informed about your vehicle and how it functions.  Then find the sports car nuts or classic car nuts and go visit them.  Every one that I have met were very good people.

Until you as the closest to the problem can get enought information when the problem occurs no mechanic that I know can tell you where to look.

Get informed and the classic car nuts will rally around and give you all the support you need.

    Thanks Jim

I'll take your remarks into consideration, but I thought these forums we use where to get a little help and information from other classic car users

I had this happen to me too... it was a clogged vent on my gas cap which would cause fuel starvation after about 3 or 4 miles. If you let it sit for a few minutes it would start up and do the same thing, usually in less time.

    Re: 64 mg midget

    Hi. Darren,

I have suffered the same problem with my 1960 frogeye. I fiitted an electric fuel pump in the engine bay near the exhaust. It ran well for a couple of years then started doing the same thing you are experiencing. I have finally wrapped the pump and petrol lines near the exhaust manifold with central heating thermal pipe wrap ( about 3" wide x about a metre long from Focus) This seems to have solved he problem since I have done a few trips in the last couple of days and the car has'nt shown any of the problems and has ran good.I can only think that the fuel was evaporating, since both pump and fuel lines got really hot, now with the thermal wrap around pump, pipes and manifold things are much cooler.

    Best of Luck,

    Graham

Hi Darren, for the sake of less than 5.00 I would change the condensor. Checking threads in Mg enthusiast I found that they can last 500 to 50000 miles. It happened to me after three months
