    Just when I thought....

... i'd be able to enjoy some trouble free motoring....

The flex hose between engine and oil gauge line gave way. 3 pints of oil all over the right side of the engine bay all over the wiring loom and down the side of my nice clean engine and gearbox casing. What a mess! Looking forward to a cleanup today Super Angry. My glamourous assistant started the endine, and it seems to be leaking where the hose is crimped. Blast blast blast!

     End of rant.

    Thanks for listening

    Ed

    Re: Just when I thought....

Actually Ed, that was part of the factory-installed anti-corrosion system for British autos.  Everyone knows that a good coating of quality-grade lubricant on all metallic components helps prevent water-based corrosion and electrolysis - or so the Abingdon boys led us to believe.

Must be some truth to it, as look how many leaky Brit sport cars are still out running around 30-50 years after they left the factory, vice how many leak-free Pintos, Pacers, and Vegas are still out there ...  Beer

No problem Ed, Just throw some lettuce and vinegar on it and have a salad!

Listen, if that's your only problem after "major surgery", God bless ya! That's annoying, but not costly or time consuming.

Man, we must have to be sick in the head to subject ourselves to this, hu? Hmm

    Re: Just when I thought....

    Guys,

The later stock type hoses don't seem as good as the originals, which are now either long gone or wearing out. We now virtually always replace these when we do major work. And we replace them with the nifty stainless mesh ones. Some folks think I charge too much for an engine overhaul. This kind of detail is what that's about...

    motorbill,

The expense of the details like a wire-mesh hose, and the concept of you charging too much are NOT mutually exclusive.

Don't knock it till you've tried it!

    Re: Just when I thought....

This hose was a new one - about 4 years old, bright and shiny. At first I thought perhaps I'd failed to tighten the union, but there was a steady drip-drip from under the crimped portion where the hose material meets the fitting.

Anyhow, it's all cleaned up now. I'm just grateful that this will never be a concours car :)

    Re: Just when I thought....

New hose fitted, and everything seems fine.

Comparison of  the old and new hoses (Moss pt. no. 376-180) showed some differences. The replacement had a longer crimp/clamp to the pipe than the leaky one. Hopefully that is a good sign.

I also discovered a dry solder joint on the radiator that was weeping coolant - on the front of the header, opposite the filler tube. I cleaned the area and resoldered. Engine ran up to temperature with no sign of problems.

Hopefully I can take the car out for some actual motoring this weekend!

    Cheers poolboy Beer.

I think the Moss site is having trouble at the moment - I've noticed a few quirks in the last few days...
