Hello everyone

 I own a 1990 mini studio2, its has a gold seal 998cc and has covered over 100,000.

I now want a bit more poke out of my mini as i am a bit of a speed demon, i ideally want to achieve 100bhp or even a little bit more.

i dont know which route to take and what bits i need to change/upgrade to achieve this, i have been looking at 1380cc and 1275's but i want to know whats best and maybe a bit more reliable, as i hear that the 1380 is prone to blowing up , i also understand that i need to change Carbs, and distributors, gearboxes, clutches and all sorts!

 now im prapered to buy all those things i just need to know what i need!

Chris, I recommend getting David Vizard's book on tuning the A series engine. It's available from Moss or other sources and is absoutely the best source for performance information on your engine. http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=34114&SortOrder=1

 From the description of your car I assume that you are in the UK, if so you might also check with Chris Betson at Octarine Services for advice. http://www.octarine-services.co.uk/  His site covers mostly the MGB engines he does, but he also is good on A series.

1293cc is a nice size and very reliable. Not to hard to get 100 bhp out of it if done properly. Starting point would be the engine and head, decent pistons and a cam to start flat top omega piston Kent cam like a 286 or even a 296 duplex gear set up vernier if poss lighten every thing you can crank con rods flywheel the lot and have it all properly balanced (this is the key) then you can have a look at the head, big values work well and a really good port job and increase the chamber size. If your looking for 100 bhp a Weber is needed 40 or 45 DCOE with the correct jets fitted.Bottom end will need to be beefed up so 4 pin at the very least s/c gear kit in there and s/c transfer gear set. Decent exhaust that's going to retain back pressure but lets the car breath so RC40 or similar, no good putting a huge 2" system on the car with a monster back box it's going to loose bhp! and a decent rolling road session to get everything dialed in.

about the carb would it have to be a weber? aren't there any SU's that could handle it?

i heard that webers have troubles in the cold? its just that i will probably be using the car all year round so it needs to be resiliant.

 

can any ine help please. i have a 1970 mg b roadster that has been sdry stored for 20 years the engine is not siezed but requires a rebuild and i would like to convert to unleaded . i u have a engine number DBV E-H139856 408 i have been informed its not the original engine and from a morris marina could any one assist me on the matter.
