    Re: Gender-Specific Cars

Ed et al; if you first might consider my 1996 Camaro Z28 a sports car (some folks might not), then I'll have you know SHE is of the feminine persuasion. This car has always been a gal in my eyes. She's my race car and we've spent some special, unique, and intense time together. We also (insert 5-letter word here, starts with B and rhymes with "itch") at each other quite frequently. ;-) And she's a bit wide in the hips. But otherwise, I'd agree with you in general.

Don't let my two cents disrupt this great discussion!

    Re: Gender-Specific Cars

Rita, I'm sure that the Canadian culture must be very similar to ours down here in the lower 48. It sounds as though your complaint is mostly focused around the inequities of commerce and marketing. I too have the same complaint.

Why is it that in too many commercials, it is the man whom is the idiot while the women always "saves the day"? I am greatly offended by this. Without even beginning to tabulate the results of the labors of men through history; I'm the one who must program the TV channels, or digital thermostat while I'm opening the jar, vacuuming (because its so heavy), and folding the lundry. Why can't men get the recognition for mowing the lawn, doing the oil change and building the shed? Why are men ALWAYS the ones maligned as fools in commercials?

The answer is quite simple. It would not be politically correct to insult women the way men are insulted 6 to 10 times an hour, every hour, every day on TV or radio. Is this an inequity, OF COURSE IT IS! I feel your pain although be it for different reasons.

By the way, a barber will charge the same price no matter what the gender, while a hair stylist will over charge the female. The last time I checked, most barbers are male while most stylists are female.

As far as gender specific cars, it has been my experience that if women "think" it was made for them, they'll buy it, and usually spend too much in the process. This phenomenon is best exemplified by the marketing of the Saturn a few years ago. It was marketed as a "chick" car and chicks responded in kind for an overpriced vehicle.

Why do women continue to pay more than men for less product? You'll really have to ask them, but they always do. 5th Avenue knows this, and therein lays the root of all this evil. A real focus for N.O.W. would be to start a boycott of any products guilty of this marketing, but I don't see that happening in the near future.

I'm on you side Rita (believe it or not), and as far as a women president, It never even concerned me that Hillary is a female. We'll see what happens.

    .

    Re: Gender-Specific Cars

Christine, you know your car much better than I do - who am I to argue Smile

I think of all our cars as female, the '92 Honda Civic, 2003 Jag X type and '67 B.

In a roundabout way this brings me to another, quite separate theory of mine on car design. Firstly, the hardest part of a car to design, for looks, is the back (bet you'll notice 100's of hideous examples on the way home tonight). Thus, I venture that the abilities of a car designer to get this part of a car "right" are a true test of their ability with line and form.

    Re: Gender-Specific Cars

    Hi guys...me again

I agree with motorbill we could drag this topic out for a month of Tuesdays and only agree to disagree. I find all marketing  and advertising very distasteful.I think the only commercials I really every liked where  with a program in the early 60's. I think it was called the 20th century with Walter Cronkite and the host was Union Carbide.I could be wrong about all this because you see I was watching this while still in the womb[;)

    Cheers...Rita

P.S. The big Healeys remind me of rugby players were as MGA's remind me of football(soccer) players, both wonderful to look at and exciting to play with!

I'm still looking for the A with my name on it.

    Re: Gender-Specific Cars

err, thanks Rita... I'm never going to think of MGA's in the same light again Surprise

Anyway, sometimes it's fun to disagree, so long as we can do so in a civilised manner (though I think I'm with you in most of the debate so far).
