Removing rear splined hub from MGB rear axle

I'm having difficulties removing the splined wheel hubs from the rear axleon my '68 MGB. The axle is off the car during restoration. Any tips or other advice would be gratefully received.

What I have done / tried so far:

    1. Removed split pin & castle nut

    2. Tried gentle leverage against the back plate to see if there was any give

    3. Used a length of dowelling against the end of the shaft, replaced the spinner and tightened (with out overdoing it and damaging the spinner)

    4. Adpated the 'Mark Evans' method using a metal rod against the shaft, a metal plate across the end of the rod and 2 G-clamps between the plate and the rear of the hub. A devil to set-up without the bits flying everywhere and not really enough clearance behind the hub to get the clamps square. Persevered with this, but no joy.

Have I missed something obvious? Is there another method to try?

    Thanks Duncan

Re: Removing rear splined hub from MGB rear axle

If you are dealing with a tube type axle, there is a split locking ring (collar) (Moss # 125-665) on the axle shaft under the castle nut. May be hard to see as it's inside the hub. You will have to get that out--no easy taskSad--before you can take the splined hub off the axle. If you have an earlier--banjo--axle you will need to use a press to press the axle out of the hub. On second thought, it must be a tube type as you have the castle nut.

Ahh ha! Thank you. Its pretty greasy in there so I hadn't seen it. Will clean the thing up and get a torch!

Next thing then is to get it out...

    All the best,

    Duncan

skillster forget the torch;you don't need it. invest in a two jaw heavy duty six inch gear puller. about 25 bucks. they are found at most auto parts stores like: advance auto or auto zone. {love that name} since you already have spit pin and nut removed, hook up puller jaws behind axel flange on machined surface, tighten the screw onto the center of axel until assly . pops lose. hope it helps . just did this and worked for me.

    Thanks,

I cleaned everything up last night and shone the torch to have a look and can clearly see the conical spacer. Seems very well lodged. Anyway, will get a puller, soak in release fluid and we'll se what happens.

You say a 6 inch puller is needed - thanks. The one I've seen is that big and I wasn't sure it was right.

Hi,just a thought on removeing the conical spacer on your rear axle.I've never removed one from an mg but, have many others over the years. You should probably try tapping around the collar first to try and loosen it.The tapered shape will actually make it hold tighter the more you pull on it.I usually use a small chisel or punch to tap around the edges of the spacer to loosen it,and make sure the space is clear of crud from all the years,to give the collar a little room to move.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I've just been out in the garage trying to get the collar out, but I can't get the thing to budge. Have squirted more release oil in there and will let it soak.

Anyone got any other methods I might try?
