Early winter in Sonora - clutch out

    71 MGB

I installed a new clutch and pressure plate last spring (can't tell how many miles ago - odometer doesn't work).  Got a few days of driving in then lost the spline on the right front hub.  Repaired that last winter, along with two new tires in front.  (It is getting hard to find people who can work on wire wheels these days.)  The first trip out on the new tires this spring everything was going along just fine.  I slow down, downshift for a turn, accelerate out of the turn in 3rd gear - was that a little slippage there?  Shift into 4th gear.  Definitely slipping now.  Did I lose an oil seal and get oil on the clutch?  I can drive but no vigorous throttle, so I can get home (about 45 miles).  The press of work keeps me away from the car for several months.  Finally got around to pulling the engine and transmission yesterday.

No oil in the bell housing or on the clutch pressure plate.  No sign of clutch spring failure. Clutch disc is smooth bot not glazed or oily.  Flywheel surface smooth, not glazed or oily.  Clutch release arm moves freely without side play or binding.  Clutch slave cylinder extends and retracts smoothly without binding (tested before engine removal).  I don't see what the problem that caused the clutch slippage is.  Can anyone else enlighten me?  I want to get the right parts to make the repair.

The MG is up on jackstands again and probably will remain there until next spring, thus the early winter.  I discovered some damaged wiring underneath so will be installing a new rear wiring harness along with other parts yet to be found while working on what I know about now.

The wife wanted me to buy the MGB "so I would have something to do."  I believe she got her wish.

Oh, to be as young as I think I am.
